Does Wright get too cute sometimes?

I love Edgar Wright but sometimes I wish he'd take a chance and go beyond the gimmicks. He's clearly very creative and Baby Driver deserves lots of praise for the technical aspects alone.

Baby Driver was quite good (for what it was) but the movie had no real heart to it. Lots of effort into syncing the music to the action etc etc but once the movie has to conclude it has no where to go since there's not enough plot or character to go with it. Just a basic storyline to give purpose to the first 60 minutes.

I just don't want Wright to be the next Tarantino. Another talented filmmaker who goes back to the same well over and over instead of daring to try something different.

I agree with you. I think this film is stuck somewhere in the middle regarding Wright's style of filmmaking. It went too far as far as what this film was, and at the same time it didn't go far enough...

His other films, though grounded in realism in some aspects, have a heightened reality feel to them. This story was more standard, though it didn't go the expected route, so all the "cutesy" things that Edgar does felt somewhat out of place.

Also, I think it would've been more effective to have just one scene with the music syncing to the action. Either the "tequila" scene or later when the crew and the police are having the shoot-out. After the first scene, it was like hearing the same joke twice. It's not as funny the second time around.

As you said, there was lots of technical coolness, but not much of a heart.

I do love Wright, and I did enjoy some aspects of the film, but it just felt a little disappointing. I really think he's at his best when working with Simon Pegg, or maybe those films fit my tastes better, idk. I was just expecting more...

Funnily enough, I was thinking of Tarantino on my way home from the cinema and the types of films he's making now versus earlier in his career.
