How does Rotten Tomatoes have 300 reviews one movie, 150 reviews for another?
That's a bit shady.
shareThat's a bit shady.
shareIt's not shady, it just means more critics reviewed one than the other.
shareBecause half the "reviewers" are frauds, with some shitty blog so they only go to movies they want to see.
shareIn what way are they frauds? Just because they don't work for some prestigious media outlet?
shareThey have no idea what makes a movie good. They just talk a lot of nonsense and bait an audience. If they really had a respected opinion, they wouldn't be blogging. They'd have a real job that actually pays THEM to see a movie. But you know...they get by, because a sucker is born every minute.
shareI guess we should all just quit posting our opinions on this forum then since we couldn't possibly know what we're talking about since no one is paying us for our thoughts.
shareForum users aren't claiming to be reviewers, though.
shareWell many are certainly providing reviews. And what makes a reviewer a reviewer? What makes a reviewer legitimate?
Mint Berry Crunch seems to think that you can only be legitimate if someone pays you. But the film criticism industry is very small and there are certainly far more capable people than there are slots to fill.
So what else is it? Do you need a film degree? Or do you need to have made a film of your own?
Film criticism is obviously not like being a neurosurgeon. I certainly think you can be self-taught and provide insightful ideas and observations.
If our opinions are whether we liked the film or not, yeah, we should stop posting, because that's a complete waste of time. Luckily, in reality, there are plenty of things to discuss about movies besides whether they were good or not.
shareI follow Chris Stuckmann on YouTube. He's completely self-made but I think he does a good job reviewing films. I take his reviews as seriously as I would take anyone else's.
There is something to say about a reviewer who has a strong academic background, but I don't think that's essential to being good at assessing a movie.
anyone with a blog can write a review , journalism is dead
