Rubbarb Pie (Spoiler)

What was the significance of the pie - other than the obvious in her escape plot - what was the significance for the fiancé? I missed the first 10 minutes - so it may have been explained then.

reply

Jessica had mentioned when she and Evan were hosting the new neighbor for dinner that the one thing she could cook was rubarb pie but that she hadn't made it in a long time. She knew Evan would smell it and put two and two together. Plus she needed Simon to eat it with his fingers so he would leave prints on the keypad.

reply

But when did Evan smell it?? He initially noticed her lipstick on his collar then the call from her friend made him suspect him right?

reply

the friend calling saying he sent his now dead cop friend information about Simon the day he died. That made Evan take a last look in the house. Obviously the timing of her making the pie was incredible with him being in the house. While the room was sound proof it wasn't smell proof with baking a pie.

reply

I completely missed that he smelled the pie.

reply

Did her captor pack her lipstick when he had gone to fetch her belongings? Even if he did, I am not sure most men would know the difference between the colors their women wear, I don't wear lipstick but I doubt my hubby knows what any of my makeup looks like. I guess she got really lucky with her plan, it all just fell perfectly into place.

reply

Well, Robin was wearing lipstick all the time too. I guess that was part of his '50s get-up. So I'm sure he provided it to them.

And the significance of the lipstick on the collar was not about the color. Remember earlier in the movie Evan told the story of how Jessica had marked up all his shirt collars with lipstick I guess as a way of marking her territory (I don't clearly recall the whole anecdote). So seeing the lipstick on Simon's collar was another clue to Evan that Jessica did that.

reply

You are right, I had forgotten about that part. Thanks that makes more sense.

reply

You are right! I forgot the lipstick story as well and your take makes more sense than me thinking he recognized the color.

The whole rubbarb pie deal requires huge suspension of disbelief. Aside from the incredible luck of the fiance coming at just the right moment, if he used a three digit combination, that would be 999 possibilities, no way she'd have been out that quickly. If she was smart enough to think of that, a better possibility would have been lightly dusting the keypad with flour or something, and if there wasn't some kind of limit to the amount of entries, she could have it in a couple hours. Of course in doing so Lifetime has destroyed the likelihood of psychos using keypads if they decide to 'keep' a woman

"what is your major malfunction numbnuts?!!

reply

That's why she had him eat the pie with his fingers during their picnic, when he went to leave he left pie on the 4 digits of the code. That left her with I believe 24 possibilities for the code.

psycho's may just decide they need a combo of more than 4 numbers, 5 goes up to like 120 different options.

reply

And don't forget too, she had been watching him do the code for some time. So at least she'd have a hint if he started the combo at the top of the keypad or middle or bottom. I think she'd have the general pattern kind of close provided he hadn't changed it for a while.

reply

Huh? where are you getting your maths from? 4 digits is 10,000 combos (weeks to beat), 5 is 100,000 different combos(months to beat).

"what is your major malfunction numbnuts?!!"

reply

She didn't have to figure out the combo based on every number on the key pad, he left pie marks on the 4 numbers he used which were 1379, which meant she only had to try combinations using those 4 numbers.
Here are the possible combinations
1379
1397
1739
1793
1397
1379

3791
3719
3917
3971
3179
3197

7913
7931
7391
7319
7193
7139

9713
9731
9173
9137
9317
9371

Only issue would have been if he used one of those 4 numbers more than once.

reply

Lol, I'm always missing stupid thing like that with math, completely forgot about the narrowing down of the digits, even as I was mentioning it (all I can remember about this specific combo math from college is that it involved an exclamation point symbol and the word 'iteration' or something like that). Still it shows that even if she had not thought of the pie, she could have probably punched out the entire pad for the right combo every time he left the room.

reply

I missed a couple of key things that others pointed out as well, like the lipstick on the collar bit.
I also thought about her attempting the code each time he left, too, but then again he could have been recording her activity while he was gone, like when he recorded her outside of his door, then he would have punished her. I don't think they mentioned him recording them while he was gone, but I wouldn't have put it past him. Plus he changed the code often according to the other woman, I actually checked out of curiosity and the final code did differ from a previous one he had entered. She definitely outsmarted him in the end though.

reply

Actually, the numbers were not 1379, but 1590. Hence why the correct combination was "1950." His fantasy decade.

reply

Just looked again, have it saved on my dvr and it is indeed 1379 plus the # keys which had pie on them. Somewhere in the first half it was 9250#, he obviously did change it often as the other girl had commented but the final scene was 1379 (not the code just keys with pie on them).

reply

That's weird. I would have sworn she tried 1379 the very first time she tried the keypad and it didn't work. I noticed it when it happened, because those are the last four digits of my childhood phone number.

I also noticed that later on when Simon punched in a code that worked, it wasn't 1379. I wasn't watching closely in the final keypad scene and didn't notice anything particular about the numbers then.

So it's kinda crazy to me that you're saying the final code, the correct one, was 1379. I don't have it recorded so I'll take your word for it, but if 1379 was not tried by the captive early in the movie, how did I "see" it? lol Precognition? Coincidence, I suppose.

reply

The code wasn't necessarily 1379, but those were the four numbers of the code. They all had pie on them, so the character just had to try different combos using those #s until she figured out the correct one. There are 24 possibilities. I liked the movie and have been trying to get hubby to watch it, so I saved it, but that may take forever lol.

reply

Right, but when she tried 1379 earlier in the film (the only time I saw 1379 used), there wasn't pie or anything else on the keypad. And I thought his code at one point used numbers that were not the "corners" but used a central digit.

reply

Probably it was 1973, which would make sense, because it would correlate to a significant date in Simon's life; his or someone's birth, a date someone was married, or someone's death.

reply

Ahh, I didn't get the significance of eating the pie with his fingers-- good catch!

reply

:)

reply

Highly unlikely that the small of the pie would get through that metal wall. Also, unlikely that Evan could identify the smell as rhubarb- she said she hadn't made it in a long time. And why did she think Evan would smell it from his house or outdoors, anyway? It was just a fluke that he came into the neighbor's house when he did.

reply

It's more likely than you think. Ours sense of smell is the strongest in triggering memories. The smell of freshly made cookies or apple pie bring happy memories. So Evan would recognize the smell. Plus, don't forget, Simon was just eating the pie, the smell of it would linger upon him.
