Easy to get cocky and let your guard down when your suspect is wearing a plaid jacket and a dorky hat from the 60's.

And the same with her husband Evan in the end. When he learned from Simon that hus friend (a cop) had been killed probably by the professor who always taught at universities and then students disappeared...
Why did Evan not call the police and have 10 cops jump into the house? Why did Evan jzst knick on Simon's door all alone and screamed "I know my wife is in here"? He should have known that with a bunch of policemen it would have been easy to arrest the professor and find his wife sooner or later.
