Burton just the wrong director for this story?

On paper, I can see why they picked him. Name recognition and his signature weird style. But maybe Gore Verbinski would had been better?

I would have thought Jake Kasdan would have been a better choice, because he wouldn't try to make it weird and would have made it more like a simple live version of the original which would probably have been an easier sell than a weird Burton remake.

It's already a pretty insane story about an elephant using its ears to fly. It just doesn't get any weirder than that.
