There are things to appreciate here
I quite enjoyed the movie until the clown, the bear and the other creatures appeared upstairs. My problem with the monsters is that they looked exactly like people wearing masks and costumes, which took me out of the movie. Then when all the other monsters broke into the house, and took some of the kids, that sequence looked like a bad stage play. Also in that whole second act (with the parents fighting the monsters in the house) some of the dialogues and reactions of the characters seemed random and improvised, and not in a good way.
At the same time I do appreciate that they tried to do something fresh by using practical effects instead of CGI. I also liked the performances and the tone of the movie. It was sort of a dark tale; something I don't think I ever saw, at least not in the last 10-15 years. I gave it a 6/10.
