Felt the comedy was pretty obvious...

I don't mean this to sound smarmy, but I've found myself a little confused at the mixed reactions "Krampus" seems to have gotten - not regarding the film's quality persé, but at the fact it wasn't a full-on horror film and more of a comedy-fantasy-horror. I honestly felt the vibe of the movie was pretty obvious from the trailers i.e. I don't think they tried to dupe us and make it look scarier or more serious than it actually was. It was pretty much exactly as I expected it would be.

Now, whether or not the humour and/or horror elements worked for you is an entirely different matter. But I am surprised that it seems more people didn't pick up on it.

I have a hard time relating to what most of you guys seem to perceive as horror. In my opinion, pretty much ANY movie that revolves around an evil Santa (Krampus or not) isn't going to be real horror... It's the same thing with dolls, clowns, monsters or anything else that's fantastical and high-concept.

I mean, do those kind of horror movies really scare people? I know everyone's taste is different, but for me there's like "box office horror" and then "real horror." I won't list a bunch of my favorite stuff because it's so subjective, but everyone who's into horror movies enough to know what REALLY scares them should be able to recognize the difference between these styles.

There are horror movies that are entertaining, and then there are horror movies that stay with you for days... I guess it just depends on what scares you, but I'd never go into a movie like Krampus expecting it to REALLY scare me. I think it was pretty obvious that this would be more of a Gremlins-esque movie, if not before you watched it, definitely after. (Although like I said, I can hardly imagine watching this trailer and anticipating true horror.)

So I think you're right about that, and I don't understand it either. Despite what a lot of angsty teens on this forum would have you believe, this WAS a "family horror movie" just like Gremlins or Goonies. I liked it a lot, but it drives me nuts when people in other threads criticize without context or objectivity.
