Weird Response - SPOILER

If you haven't watched the show through episode 8 or 9, you can stop reading if you don't want spoilers.

I found the response of the law firm to Christine's sex tape odd. First of all, even though the video looked like it was coming from her email address, why would they all assume that she'd send that out there? Especially given her reaction, what reason would an intern trying to win a spot in the firm possibly have for emailing out a sex tape to everyone in the firm? With all the hacking going on, it would be easy for someone to hack into someone else's email (happened to me recently). Only her current boss, Skip, seemed to think that perhaps she hadn't been the one to email it out. In fact, he's the only one who acted appropriately.

Secondly, why would everyone, including David, just automatically assume that she really was getting paid for sex based on one video? (David actually might have reason to believe it.) If I saw that, my first assumption would be that the couple was engaged in some kinky role play, and of course, that's how her attorney passed it off.

And how about her attorney? From being her first client, he turned out to be a stand-up guy!

Anyway, I found her co-workers' reactions over the top and I'm glad she got her revenge - but 1 million doesn't go far after you pay your attorney 1/3. I don't know if you have to pay taxes on settlements. I still have two episodes to watch.

I couldn't believe that her FAMILY thought she sent it out to them, too! She had to tell her dad that she didn't and he was like ohh sure, ya of course. It's like, why the hell would she send it out to the whole firm, and her family? No one had any trust in her? I thought that whole part was stupid.

Maybe her family didn't believe her because they've known her for quite some time and she has done things like this before. I think she DID send it herself. She used the natural assumption people will make (why would she send that of herself?) to create a situation and leverage it into a juicy settlement. Working as an intern was only taking up time she could be escorting and actually earning. I think she decided she wanted out of the lawfirm anyway and being the sociopath she is, was perfectly willing to send that video to everyone she worked with and her family.

CAVEAT: I haven't seen episode 13 yet.

I mentioned this in another thread....the apartment she bought....I assume it was a co-op or condo, was high end Chicago real estate, it surely cost more than one million.

Even if Christine just paid a down payment....NOTHING is guaranteed in the world of escorting....she could get arrested etc. The scene where she was talking to, I assume, an accountant who deals with the wealthy and they were discussing off-shoring money etc....was laughable. It's wasn't as if Christine was awarded $20+ million, one million doesn't go very far these days. A Powerball winner usually does much better.

As for the co-workers reactions to her sex tape, I agree, for a law firm, which must surely be dealing with many sexual assault cases as well as cases basically dealing with wealthy spouses cheating etc....they were all acting like a bunch of high school mean girls.

Granted the Christine character is a bit 'off' with sociopathic tendencies....would she actually send out her sex tape to her co-workers as well as to her family?

The writing for this series is very inconsistent. Then again....too many people keep all their personal business on their cells, it would have been quite easy to access a lot of her personal info just through her cell. I gather her info was taken off her cell when she left her phone at one of her clients....the guy who became obsessed with her and ended up stalking her. He probably sent out the sex tape.

btw, a friend won a $300,000 settlement, after attorney fees and settling on some other situations involved with the case, they ended up with just $100,000. The one million Christine received was small change, her apartment alone was worth more than one million. She also has other expenses involved with setting up her own business....she has to dress the part and buy expensive clothes etc. It's not as simple as she thinks, I guess she will find out in Season Two.

Yes. She knew Jack had gone thru her phone when she went back and retrieved it. The face was lit on the phone and it was turned to her texts with her sister. When she saw that, she got a nervous look on her face and seemed to want to get out of there ASAP without confronting Jack about it. At that point, she realized he was trouble. For all we know, Jack could have been going thru the phone all night while she slept. He obviously got her real name, personal phone # and work phone #. If she had a link to her work email, he could have gotten that too, including a single office-wide email address for Kirkland.

Her mother believed Christine sent the email. But there was nothing else to suggest she did and several things to suggest she didn't. When Tellis first showed her the video, she immediately went to the ladies room, took out her phone and scrolled thru the list of recipients on that email. Then she wiped tears from her eyes. If this had all been her own plan, she would have known who she sent the email to and she wouldn't have been crying in the privacy of the bathroom stall. And furthermore, Jack-who was bent on revenge-would not have suddenly stopped harassing her at that same time.

Also, she previously forfeited a half-million dollar inheritance to prevent those same email recipients from learning about her secret life. She couldn't have known circumstances would result in an even bigger settle from being fired.

Just watched the episode again. The first time through, I also thought that it seemed like an odd response. Especially when the title of the email is "Christine Reade *beep* Me" which would be odd to say if she sent it on first place...she isn't exactly *beep* herself.

On rewatch though, David Tellis starts poisoning the minds of the other employees by exposing the fact that she was breaking company rules. Using another intern's password, showing Skip that she was going behind his back and lying about things to get into David Tellis's files, calling her unstable and sort of proving it to the other employees by all of her actions that had proof and witnesses. So, regardless of the video, she was already being exposed. The video just made Tellis's accusations even more believable.

The reactions of the others ("This is a career killer", she's "dirty", ect) was a cruel but predictable response in my opinion. People are jerks. I'm more shocked that not one person went up to her to see if she's okay before the breakdown scene but then again, it was clear she didn't go out of her way to make friends.

So, that being said, on rewatch I fully believe that David Tellis had enough proof to show that she was definitely unstable during the events of that episode, enough to make it seem like she would do something like that. At the time, he had no way of knowing she also had a video and voice clips of him, and thought that he could just write her off at this point. With as much information he already had on her and was spreading during the course of the episode, the reaction of the employees seems more realistic.

Still cruel, though.

What a lovely day!
