It's an independent movie that only cost 5 million to produce and the distributors came along after it played at Sundance. It got greenlit in the manner that Smith wanted to make the movie so it got made. The cost of the movie is so low it doesn't have to hit a very big audience to make the money back. If this movie does mildly okay at the box office then the movie was a success. It's not like any of Smith's previous movies made that much money in comparison to bigger movie anyways.
