why the Strange Brew "homage" explanation doesn't work

"...plus a big fat homage to Strange Brew, one of my favorite films of all time. It was one of those movies I stumbled across on TV as a kid, and it became my religion."

The problem with Smith's defense of Yoga Hosers is that Strange Brew featured characters from an already established, well regarded program in the form of SCTV. Bob & Doug McKenzie's "Great White North" proved to be such a popular segment that an album was released in 1981 (selling over a million copies) and then the movie came out two years later. So even when the iron was hot, everyone involved took their time to make sure it was done right.

In the case of Yoga Hosers, Smith essentially found a reason to put his daughter into a movie, prop it up with Johnny Depp's daughter, and then name drop Strange Brew and the B grade Full Moon movies from the 90's in order to justify the whole thing. The frosting on that bs cake is how people still come up to him and positively talk about Mallrats 21 years later. So what? I liked Mallrats too, and it's a tossup between that and Clerks as to which is my favorite. Doesn't mean I- or anyone else for that matter- would want to see a movie about living food products and two self-centered millennials.
