How can a guy so good at critiquing movies be so bad at making them

Seriously, I watch his youtube channel stuff and his reviews of movies are so insightful regarding the writing, production and filming. he seems hip to all these little nuances that directors employ and he seems to be quite seasoned in the craft of movie making. which makes it so hard to understand how its so possible he keeps cranking out his silly juvenile type movies. there has to be a good filmmaker in there somewhere.

I am thinking its pot that is the heart of the problem. some people pot can help the creative muse in a good way....others, it dumbs them down, and they revert to a high school locker room mentality.
I suspect this is what its effect on him is. ther problem is, he is such a pothead that he explains away his issue by thinking making bad movies is somehow "chasing whimsy". the problem is....lots of directors chase whimsey with weird projects...yet pull them off. kevin however cant. think of the recent movie "the lobster". what a *beep* crazy scenario for a movie.

yet it was pulled off because the creator of that movie despite also chasing whimsey...had a clear head and wasn't content to turn the concept into a lesson in juvenile jackassery like kevin does. he seems content to do his new role which is speaker and podcaster and guest. hey if that works for him, great! but I always thought of him as a filmmaker by trade.

and I wouldn't want his last few films to be the legacy. I would want to try and create something that will stand as a great movie. the fact this guy cant do that, IMO is pretty odd. yes clerks and chasing amy were good movies...but really only to a vocal minority. the legend of those movies is almost exclusively within a small type cult audience who continually refernces those movies lovingly. but thats not real. I doubt people will be talking about those to as if they are "classics". they are just good movies that impress almost strickly due to nostalgia.

Even back 20 years ago he was all talk and talk and no bark. That's when he was at his best, even then he bragged so much and criticized so much. He always blamed an actor or the movie company for his movies not making more money

I just listened to the latest Joe Rogan podcast with him and although it is highly entertaining, I get the feeling that he is faking it. Not really being that dude he and we think he is... in the more than 4 hour podcast, Joe leaves him in the dust when it comes to originality and genuineness. I don't know.... he is cool and all that but something about him seem fake when he is challenged a wee bit. My point is, I guess, that perhaps he really is not all that and theses movies is a testament to this.

I've really been getting into joe rogan podcasts lately. I just found him by accident linked to God knows what on youtube. I remembered him from way back but had no idea he had such a great show with such a huge variety of guests! its been a total joy listening to Joe talk about subjects alot of people might think are weird also, but I love that about Joe.
havent heard his kevin smith one yet but will look it up and check it out.

I think Kevin probably is a nerd thru and thru and I dont mean that in a bad or mean way.I just dont think he is comfortable with someone like Joe. I think their worlds are too different. but I still enjoy both of their podcasts despite.

I guess you are right. If any of us would chill with a celebrity or Smith for that sake, we would probably also come off as a bit fake... I would surely try to fit in and impress, and sound unimpressed (while being very impressed). Every time I see someone famous, I always try to act as though I have no idea who they are.... probably very obvious to them. Anyway, he seem like a cool dude, who is sometimes out of his element. My guess is that his element is Clerks and his own podcast. He knows how to give a solid critique and apparently he does not know to create blockbusters (yet), and perhaps we should just leave it at that. The great Roger Ebert also knew how to critique like a king and yet he too has some questionable movies and scripts to his name....
