They were laying odds on each persons survival but the aristocrats (or whatever they were) were only shown making a single bet that appeared to be an even money bet against each other ($5 million that she decided to accept and double). Seeing as there was never a payout shown, it seemed like such a pointless subplot.
I agree, one of the characters 'doubled' a $5million bet (or perhaps even £5million. Seeing as the characters were British') suggesting an evens bet, as you suggested. Earlier in the movies odds were being announced, one pf which was 1 million to 1. 10million x 1million? *beep* me, is there even that amount of money in the world in either US or Sterling, lol.
No - The betting made no sense from the information we were given. At the start of the game, some of the odds were e.g. 200/1. These are house odds which would mean that for every 1 Dollar/Pound you wager, the house will wager 200 and the winner takes all.
However, when we see the aristocrats? making a bet, it's like for like (evens) e.g. one makes a wager and the other matches it - winner takes all.
I thought, at the beginning when they were announcing the odds, that it was being done as a psychological trick for the participants. If someones odds were not good, they were more likely to give up or sacrifice themselves. However, this did not play out.
I enjoyed the film though for what it was - solid 6/10 from me.
Ths was a rip off from the old Star Trke series in an episode called The Gamesters Of Triskelion...
