They aren't familiar with the grindhouse era, mostly. They expect a modern standard horror movie, they don't understand what a grindhouse film is or the genres particular quirks and trademarks.
Rob Zombie makes films for hardcore fans of the horror genre in generl, not for the masses, thats why he won't get funded. There are so many homages in his films, it shows that he knows the genre through and through.
Reminds me of deathproof, people were calling it a low budget piece of poo at one point. Little did they realize it was deliberately made that way to pay homage to the grindhouse trash flicks of the 70's.
I feel that zombie set out to make something similar, hence all the 70's references. People just didn't get it, maybe they should stick with mainstream higher budget "horror" films or do some research on the 1970's and grindhouse theatres and films if they aren't old enough to remember them.

Just because it was intentional bad for all intents and purposes with it referencing 70s movies means we need to cut it some slack? Nope, the movie is terrible and so was deathproof and they dont feel like 70s grindhouse movies. Those older movies have a charm to them where it seems like most of the time they weren't 100% intentionally made as jokes, when you try and copy it now you are left with a director who is using all the worst parts grindhouse is known for and you are left with a soulless movie that took no effort to make and one in which the actors are intentionally bad. Its like when people make spoof videos about something that is already supposed to be comedy, it doesn't work.
