I have not given up hope for RZ.

Over all, I think there's a lot to like here, even if nothing is new to the genre. I detested Halloween 2 and Lords of Salem (and believe me, I tried like hell to like them). House & Rejects are a couple of the best horror films ever, and for different reasons, which adds to their brilliance. This one doesn't compare, but it didn't suck either.

The dialog was inconsistent. At times, like when Doom's Head was monologueing, it was great. Also liked Sick Head's rambling English/Spanish, it was the right amount of camp and genuine scariness. BUT! the talk btwn the captives during the "down time" was really lame. Almost excruciating. Couple that with terrible acting, and yep, he's got some problems.

The murderers were interesting. The old freaks in charge of the game were interesting (Judy from To Sir With Love!!). I particularly liked the lack of backstory. The most boring characters were the victims. Meg Foster was criminally under-used, considering that she is the only really good actor of that bunch. And Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs with that horrendous accent! Really cheapened it. And as much as I would love to hang out with Sheri and parrrrtay, she was not particularly convincing, either. Her looks make up for it, though. I could watch that girl sleep. Whoo.

The violence was exceptional. The cinematography was spectacular; the spaces looked incredibly real. I love his attention to quirky detail.

I fully expected to be annoyed by Zombie's pathological use of profanity. I didn't think this was that bad. I also expected a rape scene (he seems to like them) and was relieved that there wasn't one.

So yeah, not his best, but better than his worst. I'm still a fan.

I'll tell ya right now he needs to ditch this fascination with the 70's and the whole "grindhouse" vibe. That, and consider lowering Sherri Moon on the cast list.

The dialogue is fine for the types of movies he makes, but the crudeness is too frequent to be believable. Foul language is fine, but in this movie especially, some of the *beep* was a bit too much.

reply

You're right, he should be done with the 70s. In this movie there were parts that we've already seen in HOATC. That tried my patience somewhat. It's still creative, though. I've read a lot about the crude language, but I didn't find it as profane as Halloween and it's bizarre follow up. I was enjoying myself, maybe, and I didn't notice it. I mean, stupid or not, people DO talk like that.

reply

Well, it's essentially a remake of Running Man.

Since this was primarily a single location film, the time period could have been present day, but whatever.

As for the crude language, I'm not talking about the violent talk or "*beep*" a few times every minute. It's the other stuff that makes me think that a 16 year old boy wrote the dialogue.

I don't know, call it a personal preference, but the majority of his critics seem to agree with me on this aspect.

I've seen most of Halloween and none of the sequel, but I've heard how *beep* they were.

reply

Never seen The Running Man. Can you believe that? I'm going to see that asap.

reply

haha really?

The basic rundown is a man must survive various killers in an enclosed environment. People bet on who will kill him, etc.

It's essentially the same thing, but obviously there are differences.

reply

I'll get back to you. ?

reply

Watching the Running Man. Not even close. I do like all the 80s one-liners, though.

The gritty hardcore 70's vibe of Rob's movies are what makes them stand out from the rest and makes them the best. Sherri should always be one of the main characters. Great actor and so hot. I think you've become jaded IMO.
