Very confusing.
With so few familiar actors and the characters rarely addressing each other by name I must admit that by half way through the series I'm not wholly sure who's who. Anyone else feel the same?

shareI think it's only certain characters that don't use names. But that's just historical accuracy.
'Monsieur' - Philippe Duc of Orleans - the Kings brother
'Chevalier' - Philippe, Duc of Lorraine - Monsieur's Lover
Madamoselle de La Valliere - the King's mistress - her name is Louise.
The Queen - Marie Therese.
Most of the others are called by names. I don't find it confusing, but you have to work a bit to figure the ones above out! After a couple of episodes I understood.
In the gentle fall of rain from heaven, I hear my God. But in the thunder, I still hear Thor
The episodes are edited from 52 down to 42 minutes. Ovation should be out of the running for the next season with the horrible butchery they have done to the show, hopefully, though I doubt the US is even a tertiary market for Versailles, considering Simon Mirren's experience here.
With the help of IMDB I have been able to identify most of the characters by relationship when not by name.
I had a difficult time for a while, too. Many of the actors are relative unknowns--particularly the young ones, the characters look very similar and many of them either rarely address each other by name or have so many names/titles that I couldn't keep anyone straight. So no, you're not alone. ;-) I am slowly starting to sort it all out, though.
shareI looked up who's who in the cast on Wikipedia and IMDB, and am re-watching episodes 1 + 2. Helps with name recognition, and pronunciation too.
shareTried closed captioning. It helps to see the characters' names.
