I think he's literally referring to the mirror. If you remember, that "bad" mirror was made out of a bunch of smaller mirrors attached side-by-side. In the end he has a good mirror made of one solid piece.
If you want to make it about the man in the mirror than I suppose you could do that. It depends on the viewer. But I think he was being literal.
I tend to agree after watching it further to see it replaced by a clearer sharper image of himself, which could be the complaint in the first place.
I'm going to miss this place. Too bad a few rotten apples had to go and completely ruin a good thing.
