Unless this movie will be viewed by new comers ... I believe you all already knew that the two were dating. But here is a clip from Lifetime that perhaps gives an insight to it.
I'm guessing that interracial relationships weren't as accepted in Hollywood back in the early 90s as they are today. It would explain why they were so tight lipped about it. Today, hot black chicks and pretty white boys are the thing. ask Zoe Saldana.
I have always liked Mark Paul Gosselaar because I always thought he was an underrated actor. But I didn't even know until recently (about a year ago) that he and Lark dated and I only found out about a week ago that they went out from 1989-1992.
But to your point athomas1, Mark and Lark were in 1989-1992 Hollywood and the world and showbiz were still tripping over race relations and it sucks that they had to hide their relationship.
But these days, white cats are dating black chicks like it aint no thang and this is one of the things that makes me feel good about race relations even though in 2014 and beyond we still have ways to go on this subject.
I doubt interracial relationships had anything to do with this.
For starters - look at the show. Screech chased around Lisa for 5 years. Additionally, Slater (Latino) dated Jessie (Caucasian) for much of the show's run. And as one user pointed out, Lisa and Zack hooked up in one episode. So if Hollywood was weirded out by interracial relationships, then their concerns didn't exists on the actual show.
There are multiple - and, imo, better - reasons why the relationship was hush-hush.
1) Mark Paul Gosselaar was a teen heart throb, and that image plays better when the public perceives the person to be 'available.'
2) The show's producers probably didn't want teenage relationship drama affecting the show, and so the two had to keep their relationship private from the executives.
3) Lark Voohries had a strict religious upbringing, and that might've played a role in the secretive nature of the relationship.

I read somewhere that there was a lot of (fan) backlash after the Zack/Lisa thing. It was implied that it had to do with race, but now that I think about it, it might make more sense that it was because people were hardcore Zack/Kelly fans...
(Then again, I don't know what people's reactions were to the Zack/Jessie kiss)

1. Teen heart throbs were showcased to be single. One that comes to mind is Kirk Cameron who had a long term relationship with his co-star and wife Chelsea Noble but of course magazines were not going to promote that information for the viewing audiences because they needed him to be shown as available.
3. This movie just touched on her background slightly when she mentions she couldn't accept Birthday gift due to being a Jehovah's Witness but don't think it was reasoning for a so-called secret relationship. If anything perhaps she had strike parents.
My take on this whole secret thing that ppl are claiming is not that they did so but during that time (unlike today) not everyone wanted to know who was dating whom. Think the only big news in the 90s about who was with whom had to been surrounding Michael Jackson.
I've read somethings that seem to point to two main reasons why they a) keep it secret and b) why it didn't work out. I think they both make sense.
1) The execs saw the two as co-workers, and more or less tried to keep them that way. They didn't want "drama" on set, so they tried to make sure all the teens kept it professional. They really didn't want dating among the cast and they wanted them to all appear single.
2) Lark had a religious upbringing and strict parents.
An article also suggested that she was jealous of his on-screen chemistry and "flirty" friendships with the other girls (especially Tiffany) that were casted as love interests. Not sure how true that is, however.
