poor Renegade (Greek)

Obviously the Nazis are the overarching bad guys in the film, but I really lost sympathy with Saul when he threw the Greek's shovel into the lake and, if you will, caused his death. Again, of course, the Nazis have final guilt, but come on! The dude was just trying to survive, and a random guy Saul comes out of nowhere, starts a ruckus that upsets the guards, who kill him and frees the ruckus-starter. Oddly, watching that death be set in motion bothered me more than most other atrocities shown in the film. Unbelievably selfish. The only explanation that feels OK is, Saul had been driven mad long ago by the horrors engendered by the Nazis.

He was mad, how could he not be, shovelling dead bodies into ovens everyday and then shovelling ashes into a lake everyday? Victor Frankl, who survived the Holohcaust, wrote that the best peopl died in the camps only those who were 'selfish' survived, which lived with him ever after. Saul knew he was going to become one of those bodies, as did Renegade.

Ever tried, ever failed?
No matter.
Try again, fail again.
Fail better.
