Filmed in Romania?

I live in New England and there's no way anywhere in Romania can duplicate it. So just like Cold Mountain Sons of Liberty will not look or feel like America.

It also features a Romanian playing Richard Henry Lee, and considering that the Lees were continental elites as one of Virginia's First Families it seems like a very bizarre choice indeed. I think most of our the big names are being played by European actors. It just strikes me as odd, and not because I'm a "Rah Rah 'Murica" type either. It's just...well it's interesting. Now to hear that it was filmed in Romania as well I wonder if it was developed by a European production company.
To be honest the whole thing looks a bit dubious anyway. John and Sam Adams and John Hancock young and studly? Not unless the story predates the Revolution by a good 15-20 years. I expect this to be far more fictional entertainment than history.

If you want to see how most of these characters looked, check out John Singleton Copley's portraits. He was Boston's leading portrait artist but left in 1774; the London Art Scene had more to offer a man of his talents. But he painted most of the lead characters in the show--Patriots, Loyalists & British. And he did it during the period in which the show is set--or a couple of years earlier.

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has a good selection. http://www.mfa.org/collections/search?f[0]=field_artists%253Afield_artist%3A2666&f[1]=field_collections%3A3 (To see Paul Revere & General & Mrs Gage, Google!) John Hancock was a distinguished fellow & very well dressed. Joseph Warren also wore a wig--befitting his profession--which ages him; look at his face--he wasn't that old. John Adams didn't have a Copley portrait until years later, when he was ambassador to Britain after the Revolution--perhaps he couldn't afford one as a young lawyer with a growing family. Even as a young guy, he was a bit of a schlub. The one I have a major problem with Samuel Adams--that stern fellow looks nothing like the hunky actor playing him. And he was cleanshaven--as was every man in those days.

Neither this show nor Turn could be shot where the original events occurred; cities & suburbia have replaced towns & countryside. So Turn is shot in Virginia. This show could have found American locations but it was probably cheaper to shoot in Romania. I'm more concerned about the writing than the scenery....

I know the work of most of the English cast; there's a great deal of talent among them. At least the acting will be really good.

like "Cold Mountain", "Sons of Liberty" will not look or feel like America.

It's called 'filmmaking' for a reason.
You never have 100% original, authentic locations.

Most movies that show the 'United States' today are shot in Canada for example.

"Cold Mountain" looked beautiful.
"Hatfields & McCoys" did look authentic enough
for me.

Romania is a lovely place to shoot with very diverse landscape and, yes, the labour costs are much lower.

I'm very sure that if you wouldn't know where the actual shooting location is,
you wouldn't see a difference at all.

You would think: 'How beautiful New England is!'

Yea I loved Cold Mountain as well, and I think Sons of Liberty does a good job too.

I understand the cost savings. Without it, a lot of good films wouldn't even get made. If they can get Romania to look like New England I'm not gonna complain. Heck I probably won't anyway since I can't get enough Revolutionary War drama and tend to be grateful for the small amount there is.

I live in New England too and my only problem with them not filming it here is that fact that the beautiful Ben Barnes wasn't working in my region of the country!!!

reply

Really? Not even at least Canada but all the way in eastern Europe?

Er... what?

Any time will do, my love

Cheaper Cheaper Cheaper.... Get my point?

Few places in Boston today look like Boston in 1775. It's called progress. Chances are there are loads of places in Romania today that look more like 1775 New England than there are in New England today.
