But not by much. If I recall correctly, Thomas Gage was not even in the colonies during Bunker Hill. He was on a ship back to England after he was relieved of command by the King for being "too timid". General Clinton commanded the battle.

Gage was still in Command at the time of Bunker Hill. In fact it was that battle that was the end of his time in America, due to the high costs the army took in its victory. And it was William Howe that would take over Gage's command role, not Clinton. One thing is for sure, Gage wasn't on the battle field, to personally kill Joseph Warren, because of an affair with Gage's wife. It's funny that while it's generally believed that Gage's wife was the one supplying Warren with information, at least to my knowledge, it's not 100% confirmed, yet this mini-series takes that, and turns it into the affair between the two.
Actually, Gage was in Boston and was technically still in command of both the army in Boston and the assault on the peninsula. The reality was entirely different however. Clinton, Howe, and Burgoyne had all just recently arrived from England but no one had officially relieved Gage and this would not happen until he went back to England. The British Officers decided to attack in a council of war and it was force of personality and a vote that decided what to do. They all agreed they had to take action but they were bitterly divided about what and how. Gage opposed a direct assault. Howe was nominally in command of both British forces and of the attack, and again, it was mostly due to force of personality. Officially, the newly arrived general officers were observers only at this time. Howe would not be officially given command of anything until after Bunker Hill, although, they all knew Gage was being handed his hat at this time and these new officers were fighting like cats to see who would get his job.
You know I've heard lots of people bitch about a lot of movies on this page but, in this case, I have to completely agree with all of it. This series is horrible. The way many of these men and events have been portrayed is so wrong it just leaves me cringing. The way Gage is portrayed has bugged me in particular. This character, in this movie, in no way resembles the real Gage.
When his men come back from Lexington and Concord, Gage has a rebel army laying siege to his position and he's talking about confining his men to the barracks? WTF?????
Ok, I got you there, and you're right on that. Clinton lead the capture of Charleston. But Gage was still in the colonies when the battle happened. I still had to laugh though, when they had him personally go out onto the field of battlefield so he could kill Joseph Warren. And then they had Revere identify his body, after the battle. If I remember reading it right, it wasn't until months later, after the British was gone from Boston, that Revere and Warren's brothers found his body, buried in a shallow grave, and identified him, so they could give him a proper burial.
