I loved it!

So sue me, it was more entertaining then I thought it would be. Granted I didn't have much expectations but I really enjoyed the story and production. Now if people can get their heads out of their ass and just focus on story instead of being a know it all and pointing whatever fact they got wrong, you'll see it's done the job it's set out to do. Which is entertain.

As a lover of period dramas I know that no movie or show is going to be 100% accurate (which in itself is debatable since no one can really know for sure what happened hundreds of years ago exactly, there will always be something someone has to complain about.

reply

I couldn't agree more, I enjoyed every minute of it. It's not claiming to be 100% accurate so just take it for what it is. I thought the action was done very well.

Does nobody find it odd that our country has become what the British empire was? Repressing smaller nations for profit. We now have a corporate elite class. Our constitution is violated daily. Idk wtf happened to this country but they died to start this country and most people can't even take the time to read our constitution as we get half of our money taken through taxes and inflation. Wish people would learn to think so I could be proud to be american, it's kind of sad.

I'm ready to fight, are you?

My great great great grandfather was a Colonel in the Revolutionary War. I'm a veteran of OEF. Let's do this...

Hell yeah man, a storms gathering since the internet is exposing how much the media and government lies. I'd say if we don't have major changes in the next year or two (probably won't), some kind of revolution will break out. People are already organizing, and it's actually happening in every country. Generations have been manipulated through school and the media but the internet *beep* that up lol. If you're a fan of history, political science, economics, you can completely see how much we are being screwed. Either we step up or eventually we'll live in a system totally controlled by multinational corporations with no freedom. The reason it's so important is because if we do fall under even more tyranny, with technology now you'd NEVER again have a free society since now a population can be so controlled and watched. Every person that new about us being spied on should be arrested. We literally oppress the rest of the world. Lincoln, fdr, and jfk, all had plans to stop empiralism and build railroads, hydroelectric damns in africa, nuclear power plants, ect. Instead truman reversed fdrs plans and used the British contril and oppress model. I'd like to be proud to be american. Such a great country but we need to take it back. Learn, teach, organize, and our day will come.

reply

I'm with you. It's not the history in the books but I thought they got the spirit of the times and of the men pretty well right. I found it enjoyable.

reply

It was entertaining, it just had nothing to do with the actual events of the revolutionary war.....except the names and dates.

reply

It was pretty much a brief summery of the American revolution. No doubt with the short scheduling and budget, they need to make XYZ happen in abbreviated doses. If you really wanted to go in depth on every aspect of it, you'll probably need 2-3 seasons worth of episodes. (Which I wouldn't mind, but too bad the network didn't choose that route)

reply

I am happy that you enjoy it. I find it difficult to digest, especially when I hear words like "terrorist" spoken in 18th century England..the only thing "period" about this series are the clothes.

reply

As far as not knowing what it was like to live in the late 18th century? Yes you can know. There are countless written records of the period as well as paintings and drawings and maps.

reply

I'll call it creative license. I won't fault them for trying a new route and "modernizing" it a bit for general audiences. I've seen my fair share of colonial period flims (John Adams, Lincoln, The Patriot, etc, etc...) some more "period" then others. But sometimes it's refreshing to get a new spin on things, instead of the same old same old. "Sir" "madam" speeches, curtsy and the like.

For those criticizing the creative liberties, you might as well flog Shakespeare for his bio-play on Henry VII. Did Henry VII go bar hopping with a buddy drunk name Falstaff? Heck no, but hey he used creative license for an audience hungry for entertainment.

In SOL's defense I will say that I like the online features and the disclaimer. Then again, I try to remind myself-Everything on television is entertainment. I just enjoyed the recent series Manhattan, which was a period drama and was loosely based on people associated with the Atom bomb Project.
My not liking SOL is more about the "dumbing down" of the subject matter to cater to a broader audience as opposed "modernizing" it. The main characters are portrayed as superheros; leaping over rooftops and trough windows, impervious to musket rifle fire. My liking Manhattan was based more on it maintaining a higher level of sophistication, even though the producers took tremendous creative license.

The problem I have with it is, that people are going to watch this and think it's accurate. They're going to form opinions and make arguments based on what they see in this show. They'll never bother to learn the truth; they'll never crack a book and if they watch another show about, say, Sam Adams, and it's different than what's portrayed here, they'll think that show is inaccurate, not this one.

This show is teaching people a bunch of BS about our history, and it's sad because it wouldn't have been THAT hard to get it right.

reply

It IS accurate to a point. Good enough for those who have no interest in history. The British crown was oppressive in their taxation, taking people's property, etc. A group of men got fed up with it and did something about it. There was a war in which George Washington the commanding general, and the colonies won, forming the United States of America. I don't know how much you get out in the real world, but believe it or not, there are many people who don't know THAT much. Just the other day I saw a video of people on the street being asked very basic questions and they didn't know the answers. Some didn't know when Washington was president, and some didn't even know who we fought for independence. An action movie like this one will at least give them the information that. Sam Adams' age in this miniseries doesn't matter. Neither does the fact that some of the incidents were fictionalized.

You're making a lot of assumptions here!

reply

I also liked it. Even with its faults, it's a pleasure to watch anything from that era because there's so little.

On the other hand I enjoy discussing historical fact vs fiction. I just don't get too upset about it anymore.

reply

Agreed, I was never really a fan of the Colonial era, (favoring Medivel and ancient history) but the series actually made me relook at the American revolution. I find that a good thing if it gets people to crack open a book or google the historical events. Either way even if you found that it was not how it happened, you still learn something.

reply

I agree with that. Definitely did make me want to go back and explore the era again. I personally think that's a sign of an effective piece of entertainment. I'm trying to be sympathetic to those who are sticklers for accurate historical portrayals, because I know there is historical material I'd be annoyed or angry about if a depiction strayed too far in essence from the actual events. But I'm on the side of those who enjoyed this thoroughly, so I'm just shutting up lol.

reply

I love it also. Everyone did a great job, we really enjoyed it.
