British 'Oppression'?

I gather historical evidence shows that the British 13 colonies had the best quality of life in the civilized world, even better than the UK due to the fact that the Brits paid for the colonies defense, the colonists had no taxation to speak of and a mainly devolved government and had representation in government until rebels started burning down the customs warehouses so so why does our entertainment industry keep describing us as being 'oppressed'?
How were we being 'oppressed'?

Propaganda really. The debacle of the revolt was galvanised by a minority of very greedy and ambitious Englishmen. The myth of tyranny and oppression has about as much foundation as a man on straw stilts. So powerful was the rhetoric used by the 'Founding Fathers' and their henchmen that it resonates within popular memory and is why there is such a black and white view of the revolt in the US.

Indeed, 2/3 of the populace were either content under the auspices of Westminster or wanted nothing to do with violence and kept to themselves (until they were dragged out of their homes by rebel lynch mobs and then tarred and feathered).

Most white Americans think their people have been there since God created the Earth and then the evil British foreigners came and invaded and oppressed them.
