What It Did and Did not explain.

What it did explain:
How Han met Chewie.
How he got his last name.
Meeting Lando, and their strange friendship.
Obtaining the Falcon.
Why the Falcon was so trashed when he had it, but when Lando owned it, it was really nice. Also why the Falcon didn't have an escape pod.
The Kessel Run.
Hearing about Jabba and Tatooine.

What It didn't Explain:
What kind of pilot was he in the Imperial Navy. And why was he kicked out. And why did he end up in the Infantry, and not wearing a stormtrooper uniform?
Did he ever see Qi'ra again? And why no mention of her ever again?
How did he start working for Jabba?
How did Lando end up in charge of Cloud City?
Who were his parents, and what happened to them?

Let me clarify what I meant by what kind of pilot was he? I meant was he a great pilot for the Imperial Navy. Maybe he was the best TIE fighter pilot in the fleet, but like he said he liked to think on his own (which I interpret to mean, he doesn't always follow orders).

I assume he flew a TIE fighter.

It explains at the very end that he was heading to Tatooine because Beckett said that there was a guy there that was planning something big, or was a big time smuggler, or something like that.

reply

I know he was heading to Tatooine, presumably to meet with Jabba for work, but I wonder how that goes. Do you just walk into Jabba's Palace, stand above the Rancor pit and say "I'm a pilot with a fast ship and a wookie. What kind of work do you need and how much do you pay?" Obviously he had pretty high standing among Jabba's crew, up until he dumped his shipment.

reply

Pretty sure the story was left open for a sequel or two to fill in the gaps between Solo and Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.

reply

I agree with most of your questions, though just the fact that at the end of the movie he was headed to Tatooine was good enough for me ("How did he start working for Jabba?")

One other question I have is whether or not he and Lando worked together again or even saw each other again before Empire. I hope their next meeting wasn't in Cloud City.

Han knew that Lando was on Bespin, he mentioned that to Leia as they fled Hoth.

reply

Han only knew he was on Bespin because his name showed up on the computers. Han & Leia were fleeing the Empire and had just slipped away. They were looking at something on the computer that showed them where they were and what was nearby and the name "Lando" showed up. Leia said, "Lando System?" To which had replied, "Lando's not a system. He's a man. Lando Calrissian. He's a card player, gambler, scoundrel. You'd like him." He goes on to say that Lando must have conned somebody out of it.

So, Han didn't already know Lando was on Bespin.

reply

You know this because you saw the computer screen and read Han Solo's mind!!! Wow you must have an extra special edition none of the rest of us got to see. And your powers must be awesome to be able to read the mind of a fictional character a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

So like I said.

Han knew that Lando was on Bespin, he mentioned that to Leia as they fled Hoth.

I think it's been awhile since you've seen the movie. It's very clear from the dialogue between Han and Leia that it was at that moment that Han discovered that Lando was on Bespin.

I don't claim to be a mind-reader. I just think I might remember the movie a little bit better than you do right now.

This wasn't, exactly, as they fled Hoth (meaning, it wasn't right after they left the planet). It was after they had been chased and after they took refuge inside the space slug. After the escaped from the space slug and found themselves again fleeing Star Destroyers, Han attached the Falcon to the underside of one of the Star Destroyers. Han siad that right before the fleet jumps to light speed (because they thought that's what the Falcon had done), they would dump their garbage and the Falcon could float with the garbage. As they were waiting for the fleet to dump the garbage and make the jump, Han and Leia had that conversation.

Lots of things are left best unexplained. No need to invent midichlorians. Wrapping up end and exposing every mystery takes the wonder out of a story, in my opinion.

reply

Absolutely true. Midichlorians were one mistake out of many in the prequels. I choose to ignore them and pretend it never happened :)

That's what I do, too. Some people get wrapped up in the fantasy world of some movie or TV show. When it comes down to it, it's just a story. Tell it however you want. When something is left unresolved at the end, my wife always says "I want to know what happened to xyz." I always say, "It's your story now. What do you want to happen?"
