What's with all these self-references? (SPOILERS)

Electra's mother (Nora) is named after Gaspar Noe's mother (Nora Murphy)
The main character (Murphy) is also named after Gaspar Noe's mother
Murphy's and Omi's son is named Gaspar
Murphy is (or claims to be) a movie director
Electra's ex-boyfriend (who is played by Gaspar Noe's himself) owns the Art Gallery "Noe"
There are probably others that I can't recall right now.

I thought these not-so-subtle references to the director or his family to be a bit annoying, and even wondered if there is some autobiographical tone to the script. Maybe Gaspar is telling his parent's story?

At TIFF he talked about how he wanted to use his movies to reflect what life was really like.

I've never experienced the feelings in this movie, but it did make me want to.

There are others which reference his films as well. Just saw it last night and I have only seen it once, but the ones I can think of are...

The model of the "Love Hotel" beside Gaspar's bed is a prop from Noe's previous film, Enter the Void.

Sitting on top of Gaspar's DVD/VHS is a copy of the Tibetan Book of the Dead, which is also a reference to Enter the Void.

When Murphy is imagining Electra's boyfriend having sex with her, the second shot of her face down on the floor is a reference to Irreversible.

I thought that naming the child Gaspar was cute, but to repeat the joke with "Noe" and then to appear as the ex-boyfriend and everything killed the joke.
