I see a strong Influence of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's fear eats the soul. The way the interiors are shot and framed. Also we see Murphy wearing a Fassbinder t-shirt which is a little nod to the director.

Maybe but Fassbinder's characters are not shitty as this Murphy.
