I mean, there's really no two ways about it. What they depict onscreen, established in the very first scene, is porn, pure and simple. I guess it's supposed to be porn as art, but the story sucks. I appreciate the effort, but not the execution.

The director agrees with you. It's pornographic. That was his intent. He wanted to make a pornographic film that focused on the emotional aspect of sex. Whether or not the emotions rang true is up to the individual audience member. Some will find it sincere, others not so much. But yeah, it's supposed to be pornographic.
