possible way to escape from bed

I thought they did a pretty good job of showing that she was bound to the bed. Perhaps the book goes into more detail about her efforts to get out. At first blush I thought that she was stuck in the bed, but after reflecting on it I think she could have gotten out of there without cutting her hand, and it wouldn’t have been that difficult.

She should have been able to stand up on the bed. Each cuff on the bed post could be raised a couple of feet, and the chain had some flexibility, so she could have stood on her feet on the bed (perhaps with knees slightly bent). (In the movie, she only moved one wrist up the pole at a time; never both wrists simultaneously.) From a standing position, she could have used her legs to push against the wall. It would take a little work, but one wouldn’t have to be an acrobat or athlete to do it. Once the bed is pushed just a foot away from the wall, then she could actually just drop down behind the bed (still cuffed to the bed posts), and stand on the floor at a normal height. She would still be chained to the posts, between the wall and bed, but from there she could just push the bed all over the room. The floor was tile. She pushed it fairly easily once she got the one hand out. The shots of the bed from the front show it to be a typical bed frame and mattress; it does not appear exceptionally heavy. Once she can push the bed, she can do all sorts of things in the room. She could probably reach the key with her foot, and there were also numerous things in there like poles that she could have used to reach the key. And she could have closed the bedroom door to keep the dog out if she wanted to. Gerald is of course lying in the floor, but she should be able to get around him. (She might even be able to slide the mattress off the bed, and possibly the box spring too, and often those rails are not too difficult to remove. But this gets a bit more tricky.)

It’s not a major knock on the movie – and maybe this angle was addressed in the book. (E.g. if the bed is bolted to the floor or wall then this won’t work. And even if the flooring is carpet this might not work.) Let me know where this plan fails...

I am a little confused on how exactly she would have gotten over that headboard onto the floor behind it?..

That’s a great point. The headboard didn’t seem like it was tall enough to have stopped her climbing over, problem solved.
