The Ending ***SPOILER ALERT**

I was afraid this movie was going to be disappointing at the end. What do you think?

reply

It had a very "nice & happy" ending I really didn't feel bad for Samuel at all after Hannah asked "why are you so nice to me" and he answered "I don't know" I just thought ohhhhhh heck no! Not worth that tone, ewwwwww! :-X

reply

I thought he said "you don't know" meaning that he loved Hanna but she clearly didn't feel the same.

They didn't really do much with Samuel to make us root for him. The only thing that made me want Hanna to stay was her family and how if she left she wouldnt get to see them anymore.

reply

I totally agree. Samuel saw her as a duty and love wasn't even in the picture for them.

reply

That's not entirely true. I think he did see it as his "duty" to marry her, even though she was pregnant with another man's child. But he honestly did care about her. His response, when she asked why he would do all of this for her, was, "You really don't know?" which indicated that he was doing it because he did love her and would rather raise the child as his than lose her.

I will agree, though, that part of him seemed to want to be with her just because he always had been. Plus, she was considered very pretty, and I think it was a little of an ego boost to be engaged to the prettiest girl in the community. He would've made for a controlling husband, always knowing her heart belonged to another.

reply

Just saw the scene. I can confirm Samuel said "You really don't know?"

reply

I liked the ending. I was hoping she would leave the Amish church and go back to Josh. I'm glad she did.

reply

Hannah really never knew real love before she met Josh. The first time she saw him at the party she just stopped and stared at him like it was love at first sight. Fortunately or unfortunately, she got pregnant and had to make a decision. I think she tried with Samuel but, he wasn't doing it for her because he saw their marriage as a duty and didn't even include her when he decided to build a house. There didn't seem to be any love there. So, yes, I am glad that Josh came to get her because that was proof to me that he really loved her or he wouldn't have put himself in such a difficult position of having to meet her family like that. He did it anyway because he wanted to fight for her.

I really don't understand how a family can cut you off just because you don't do everything you are told to do - in the name of the church. There was no free will.

Unfortunately, that's the way of the Amish. They follow the bible and their preacher to a "T". It's their customs.

What I'm dying to know is where the house they stayed in came from... and where they got the money for their new clothes, the taxi ride, transportation to/from LA... etc..

reply

I was thinking the same thing. But, the Amish milk their cows and sell some of it and they plant and harvest crops to feed and clothed themselves. I wondered where the kids got that house too. It seems that it is there ready for rumspringa kids.

reply

I know that the Amish do have money... I visited Lancaster ~7 years ago, things may have changed, but when I was there they had a store set up. There are also several Amish markets-one in my area-that they run where they sell their crops/goods and run a restaurant. But that money goes to buying new seeds if needed, lumbar, tools that they can't make. While they make their clothes, they buy the fabric- they don't make it. They do use industrialization when it's critical.

But there's no way each kid had enough money to do all of what they did because the money earned from selling crops/milking cows is a "community" thing. And it's not much money to begin with. Maybe the church had money set aside for kids to use on rumspringa- but I doubt it.

reply

I was thinking that too. When the kids are offered rumspringa, I think they must also have money and a place for them to stay through the church.

reply

But I diss like the ending my heart broke for Josh when she didn't jump in the car worth him when he drive out there for her :'( I'm glad she ended up leaving, and writing her dad, and I'm glad he read the letter, I like happy endings, that's why I watch movies :-)

reply

I like happy endings too Bekina-1. I could see how her family put her in the background and answered for her. When Josh told her there is a great big world out there and that he wanted to explore it with him, I think she realized how she had been kept down by the Amish way of life and she had to break free to be happy. It actually is the way men are trying to control women here right now. Since Roe v Wade, women don't have to be forced to carry a pregnancy so, it gives women choices. It wasn't like that before 1973. Men were able to control women, even just a little bit. I was feisty and didn't heed to that way of thinking but, I did do things to keep my marriage in place - make "him" feel like he was controlling me even though I knew he wasn't. Eventually, I think I fell into the same hole and allowed him to control me. I didn't realize it until he decided to leave me and was still trying to make my decisions for me.

reply

I liked the ending and am glad she picked Josh, but man... Samuel was HOT.

reply

Jean-luc is hot in other roles but jesse mccartney with dark hair is HOT AS HELL! LOL Speaking of jesse, the movie keith, him as the main character, is a wonderful movie that shows that he can act.

Movie was great and im glad hannah went back to josh. I LOVED that scene where he told her he loved her and he was crying!

You might wanna put on a bathing suit cuz you'll be channel surfin in no time!

reply

Jean Luc is incredibly cute. Jesse used to be when he was young but not anymore.

reply

I was glad she chose Josh too. It was obvious they had a strong bond from the beginning.

reply

I think one of Hannah's friends really liked Samuel a lot (forget her friends name) but she was the one who told Samuel about how Hannah spent her Rumspringa time -- so I think in the end perhaps we can assume that Samuel ended up w/the friend (again forget her name) at the end; you could tell she had feelings for Samuel by the way she talked about him and I think (deep down) her friend was glad Hannah left to be w/Josh. I hope Samuel found happiness as well, if not w/the friend, but w/someone who believes in the same values as Samuel.

reply

I hope so too. Samuel didn't seem to really love Hannah. She was just a duty to him. He wouldn't have treated her like a person but, someone to help him in his quest for his desires - the house, etc. Hannah was ready to do what she wanted IMHO.

Being Mennonite this was the worst portrait of Amish life.... Little actual true Amish lifestyle. Old order do not have church buildings, do not have baptism in open waters, the teenagers do not travel to California or other states while 'running around' during rumspringa. Fiction movies can at least be semi factual.... Oh yeah... They don't sing regular Hynes, they sing from a specifial German hymnal....

It's not that difficult... Fiction plot with fictional Portugal of Amish. Unbelievable except to the shallow.

Then how do you explain "Breaking Amish"? Unless they didn't go to a different state. I just assumed they did.

reply

I never seen Breaking Amish just the promos and stuff so I can't imagine that it is any more factual then Amish Mafia. There was a show on nat geo about the Amish lifestyle that seemed pretty legit but I can't be sure.

reply

Just finished watching... Didn't like the ending. It would've been nicer if Hannah came back for a visit with her new baby and Josh. And apparently they had the baby completely out of wedlock because there's no mention of them getting married either. Not a fan of shotgun weddings like the one Hannah was about to have with Samuel but the way they ended it without much commitment kinda goes against the message of the movie.
And there were a few problems like the Amish inaccuracy but not considering that, it wasn't too bad but not worthy of an Oscar.

Plus I've never seen so many former Disney/child stars I grew up with in a Lifetime movie... First this, then PopFan with the girl from JONAS and The Bratz Movie (yes, I watched and loved both... Still do) and the guy from the Glee-rip off movie Spectacular... Is Lifetime the place to go after you've been successful in the tween/Disney Channel world??

You're not Amish, either, apparently. So stop criticizing. And you probably haven't even seen the movie. Because it's a thousand times more inaccurate than whatever I said. Complain about that, why don't you?

She ended her relationship with her dad pretty badly, that would´ve been awkward.

I believe the message of the movie was to follow your heart, but under her circumstances, it was not a good message at all. Not that this is important since this isn´t trying to be realistic, but...

... she´s a 16 year old girl that got pregnant by someone she had been seeing for a short time. They could have actually been in love but it´s not enough to raise a kid and have a stable relationship. What if they get tired of each other or realize they aren't compatible? She has no profession and no means to earn a decent life.

reply

It would have been really awkward to go back and besides I'm pretty sure that if they decide to leave the order thats it they are not allowed back.
Also she was 18 not 16 and even though she had no profession as such, she had skills she had been running the family home for years and she was by no means stupid I'm sure if things did not work out for her and Josh she could have found a way to support herself and the baby.
