Not Amish

Old order Amish do not
1 have church building
2 sing Christian hymns
3 spend rumspringa in other states like a vacation
4 use arbors for weddings
5 baptism are poured water in service not in open water nor dunked nor special gowns.
Just a few of the many problems
So who were the people?

So many images are ingrained in popular culture and media, the clichés are put into shows to make it seem more authentic to viewers who don't know any better and just expect to see certain things. Like a quaint church building, singing, a baptism, the hats, habits, dress. Plain People stereotypes that get painted with a broad stroke. There are so many variations now in habits that some orders are a lot more lenient, especially with technology and more casual mingling with the English.

Odd, what threw me the most in this movie was the arbor, of all things. It just stuck out so strangely, an immediate reminder that it was another made for TV movie. The voices, accents, out of place. I kept expecting common American slang to come out of their mouths.

I realize I'm late to the party (by over a year), but I just saw this movie today.

I kept expecting common American slang to come out of their mouths.

They DID use American slang, or at least phrases we use that the Amish most definitely would not. I doubt they would refer to men/boys as "guys." Nor would one say, when asked if she wanted more toast, "No, I think I'm good." There were other instances, like when they first took a cab, where they used phrases that struck me as odd for their culture. (Can't remember verbatim.)

The bangs on Mary were another thing that bothered me. An Amish girl wouldn't have cut her hair...at least not any that I'm aware of. But then, I've only visited Amish country, so maybe I'm wrong about that.

I'm finding the inaccuracies a little distracting. Why does Mary have bangs? Even though they've been Amish, it's highly unlikely that they've never ridden in a car, or seen a tv.

and men and women sat together in the church which i'm sure they don't in real life. and i;m sure they sing in high german instead of english

I've only watched a few minutes, and I'm waving the BS flag also.

Amish do not baptize in a lake with gowns and certainly would not baptism a man and woman side by side

While they do not believe in car ownership, they are allowed to accept rides from non Amish and hire taxis.

If the other things I've heard are true, such as men and women sitting together at church, hymns in English, and girls with bangs, definitely have to cry Foul.

I totally agree with you. Also, when shunning someone, it is always made known that they can be accepted back into the community if they are repentant and accept the Amish way of life. Also, this movie seems to be saying the Amish leaders condone members covering up sin. I think all who knew of the sin of this person would be shunned as well. So this ending just doesn't ring true.
