Season 2 - great second half after horrible first half

I just finished Season 2B after letting all 8 episodes sit on my DVR for nearly 4 months. I almost just deleted them all, but glad I gave it another shot. Man, the first half of the season aboard the stupid boat was just so awful. It's amazing how they basically fixed everything that was wrong in the second half of the season.

I really liked the hotel setting, too bad that didn't last longer. Seemed like a good place to fortify. And finally, I am starting to feel something for these characters. Well, some of them at least. I still can't stand Nick, though I liked his storyline in 2B.

I don't get exactly what happened to the guy at the hotel (I think he was the groom). Somehow he got in the middle of Travis and the two douchebags?

I think 2A was a bit better. I found the action on the boat very entertaining for the most part. Plus, 2A boasted the best guest characters with those pirates, Thomas, Celia, and Luis.

Now, I think the IDEA for 2B was good, but the execution generally sucked. Nick's Colonia storyline was utter dreck! I hated virtually every single part of it. The only bright spot to that entire dreadful subplot was Luciana. She grew on me. And I'm with you, I can't stand Nick! The hotel storyline was decent, but I just can't take Madison's character seriously as a leader. The Travis-Chris subplot with the 3 San Diego dudes was the best subplot, but for some reason, so many people hated Chris and wanted him off the series when he's not even close to the worst character. That "honor" goes to Madison or Nick.

Interesting how opinions and perspectives can be so different!

I have pretty much the opposite opinion - I thought the boat stuff was a great concept (which I've considered since watching the regular TWD and pretty much every zombie movie), but poorly executed. The key to trapping a small, diverse group of people in a small space in which they are forced to interact with each other is having interesting characters that the audience cares about. We didn't have that at this point in the series, unfortunately. So that made the boat stuff excruciatingly slow and bland when it should have been awesome.

Something happened in 2B that I wasn't expecting - I started to care about Madison, Travis, Alicia, Luciana and etc. I think by splitting them up they were better able to develop the characters and force the character development in intense situations. Also, shrinking the size of the cast helped.

I never liked Chris - he was a spoiled, ungrateful little brat, and there was no motivation for him to act the way he did, other than that the rules of life had changed and he inexplicably took advantage of that, despite caring parents and a good upbringing. Writing him out the way they did was a good move - it was tragic despite the way I feel about the character, and it made Travis way more interesting.

I'm not sure what they need to do with Nick. His character has a lot of potential, but I just can't stand him. I get the irony and the point of his character - a junkie is able to not just survive but thrive in the apocalypse when he was doomed to an early death in the regular world. But now, I think we all get the point and it's time to move on to something else. I know it sounds shallow, but a lot of why I can't stand him is his appearance. I just want to punch him in the face....repeatedly!

Right, splitting them up should have developed their characters better, but I think they only succeeded with Travis and Chris, especially Travis. His subplot really turned a lot of fans around on liking his character, although I liked Travis from the start. Sorry, but the acting of Madison is not very good and I'm being kind. I thought that sob backstory she was feeding to Strand while they were at the bar drunk was very incredibly poor acting by Dickens. The writers keep drilling a hole into our heads that Nick is her favorite. I get it, she cares more for Nick than Alicia, don't need to be reminded of it every episode. I saw little to no development of her character throughout any of 2B. I like Travis' family way more than Madison's and wish Liza and Chris were still on the show and Madison and her brood were gone.

I think I might have disliked Chris more than Joffrey, Ramsey Bolton or Paul Spector from the Fall... at least those guys had a good reason for turning out like sociopathic assholes. I'm just afraid that somehow the writers will decide that he wasn't dead and he'll somehow show up next season.

Nick is amazing!

Nick was written by a delusional liberal college arts student. The worst character in any show, ever.

I was expecting the death of the psychopath Chris since the beginning of season 2....but I was waiting a more interesting death, maybe killed by his father and not in a flashback.
