Harvey Weinstein knew that Patel probably wouldn't get a nomination in the same category as Affleck, Washington, Garfield and Gosling. It's all about campaigning.

shareTo be honest, and I'm one of the 1st to call out The Academy for category fraud, it has to be conceded that Devon is actually only in about half of the film. This will be the reason for a 'best supporting' nod. I really don't think there's a strong enough case for Dev to be put forward for the 'lead actor' categor, though it undeniable that the actors who are in the 'leas' category are extremely strong candidates.
shareYup... but to be fair, his first scene was halfway through the movie so I can kind of understand this nomination to an extent.
Plus, the lead category was stacked too so his best chance for a nom was in the supporting category.

I agree...I like Patel and think he is quite handsome, but he is a fairly one-note actor. Nicole Kidman as his mother was just excellent and deserves her nomination for her performance.

It is so annoying when sound engineers presume that 'whispering' is effective
