Underperforming 47.7m ow down from 93m Godzilla 2014
Yikes
shareBecause the first movie was crap and everyone wasted their money. People wont waste money a 2nd time.
shareThe first movie was pretty good actually and is, at this point, underrated.
shareA yawnfest not saying this new one is amazing either but at least it has more then 2 minutes of action. I go to see these movies for over the top CGI and stupidness of monsters fighting not some boring storyline and dull humans characters. The human characters are still just as dull but at least they are not as much the focus of the film.
shareAlso this weekend is pretty heavy with new releases and holdovers like Aladdin. I'm not sure what the weekend in 2014 was like but I'm guessing it wasnt as bad.
shareA lot of people felt that way but my perspective was a little different.
Here's something I just posted in another thread earlier, which sums up my thoughts on the 2014 film:
At this point, after all the negativity I've encountered, I think the 2014 film is underrated.
It was not perfect by any means, but I enjoyed it overall and, while many people didn't, I also enjoyed the Jaws-like build up to seeing Godzilla in action. Not every beat of the plot worked for me, but much of it did, I appreciated that there WAS a plot and that the writers worked to infuse some actual story into the film rather than it just be a bunch of battle sequences.
The scene with the HALO jump as the Army is parachuting into the city is done extremely well, and there's a lot of visual stuff about that whole sequence that is genuine A-level craftmanship.
I really think that Gareth Edwards deserves more credit than he ended up getting for that movie.
The first film was remarkably good. You're one of very few I've heard badmouth it.
shareReally? it is 6.4/10 not exactly great the new one will beat that easy
shareI have no idea who, or what, rates films in a given site, and generally don't trust ratings as an accurate way to gauge popular opinion to a film. I was merely saying that I haven't heard much negativity about it in real life conversations, or in posts I've read. And to go back to the 6.4 out of 10... how do you interpret that? If most people believe it's between 6 and 7 stars out of 10, that seems like a fairly good opinion of it, especially considering it's a Godzilla movie.
shareUmmmmmm....
Odd...Queen hasnt made a "This franchise is on Life Support thread" ....
I mean can anyone imagine A Disney Sequel Making Over 40 Million dollars Less on its opening Weekend than its predecessor and Losing almost HALF its audience and Queen Not already have made 3 threads about that Disney film claiming its a huge flop and the franchise is dead!
lol
Instead astonishing somehow he defending these LOW results
Now back to reality...
This actually makes me sad....
I'm a huge Action/CGI Blockbuster fan...I've always loved Godzilla and King Kong Movies...
This isnt good, The movie will be lucky to break even now...
Its got a 150 M+ Budget and Marketing is between 100 to 150 Million...
The Film needs to hit around 600 M to break even.
IMO the only possible chance it has at getting close to 600 Million is its luckily Playing in China..Its probably going to double its gross in china from what Godzilla 1 made, But Unfortunately that extra money made in China will be lost by How much Less Godzilla 2 is gonna make domestically than Godzilla 1..
Godzilla 1 had Literally some of the WORST Legs domestically of all time...
Its not a good sign that Godzilla 2 got a B+ cinemascore the same as Godzilla 1....Legs shouldnt be very good for Godzilla 2....a Sub 150 Million domestic total now seems likely...
Its becoming very clear WB just doesnt know to create or run any kind of Cinematic Universe....
Kong Vs Godzilla is probably the last time we'll see Godzilla for a while after these box office results...
By the way...Its also worth noting its clear, WBs Marketing Campaign for Godzilla 2 absolutely Backfired and turned out to be a complete failure...
They Literally showed Every Single Monster, Snippets of Every single Fight Sequences, clips of every Monsters introductions...They completely gave away every single thing about that movie in The Marketing...
Honestly not since BvS have I seen a Marketing Campaign Literally give away every possible Surprise, fight Sequence and exciting thing about a movie in The Trailers and Previews...
for some reason WB went in the exact opposite direction from Godzilla 1....The Trailers for Godzilla 1 revealed NOTHING...Not even a good shot of Godzilla, I think The Only shot shown was a shadow of him from lightening in the sky...thats why Godzilla 1 opened so high and over performed...
The Marketing campaign was Great...It got people so excited and so curious...
Its also time to maybe start considering there might have been a "BvS-Guilty by association" situation going on here too...
BvS was so awful, so universally hated, So wrong...There was no going forward...Justice League doomed, The Studio didnt know it at the time, They thought they could right the ship, But There truly was no going forward after BvS....Justice League was a direct sequel to a universally hated film that was bringing back the same cast and director...Justice League was DOOMED..
its entirely possible...Godzilla 2 may have been DOOMED too...I remember the reaction to Godzilla 1 on The IMDB boards...people were furious, They hated this film...They found it not just bad but Insulting...The lack of Godzilla, The way The movie built up to Action sequence and Then cut away and never showed them was infuriating...and The Climax of the film made people even madder, It was so dark you could barely see what was going on...
Its entirely possible like with JL....Godzilla 2 never had a chance....Like BvS, Godzilla 1 might have just Burnt That Bridge and been so bad, fans/audiences were Just Out going forward...
I wouldnt have brought this up if Godzilla 2 opened to 70 ish million like reports were suggesting earlier today...
But 51 M...Is just Bad...To Literally lose almost Half of the audience that saw the first film...Thats a statement...Thats a complete LOSS of Interest...
Very troubling indeed. They did everything right in marketing and building buzz yet weren't able to capitalise.
sharemay be under 50m now, people really hated Godzilla (2014)
shareLegendary is heavily banking on International Box Office to both rescue and bolster this movie into BIG profit ranges. They will probably tout the WW opening being huge to attempt to drive hype for this movie given that the RT user scores are high.

^^^
I think Profit Is DEAD at this point...
I see almost no way Godzilla 2 will even break even

^^^
Theres no spinning this...
Godzilla 2 is not just Under performing domestically but Its also Under performing Worse Overseas
Think about this
Godzilla in 2014 Opened to 140 Million Overseas and with NO China Gross...Godzilla didnt open in China until about a month later....
Godzilla 2 is opening in the exact same markets overseas PLUS also Opening In China and is still coming in Less than Godzilla 1 oerseas
so basically thats means Godzilla 2 is DEAD on Arrival in most all overseas markets...
Godzilla is expected to have a 65 Million Opening in China...
so thats means Godzilla 2 is basically ONLY getting about 65 Million from all other overseas markets....Godzilla 1 got 140 Million million from those same Markets...
Godzilla 2 has Literally Lost 50% of its overseas box office from the same markets that Godzilla 1 opened to 140 Million in
Luckily Godzilla 2 is performing better in China and should make around 120 Million there...but thats only a 50 Million Bump From Godzilla 1
with the way Godzilla 2 is DEAD ON ARRIVAL in all other overseas markets...
at Most Godzilla 2 Might make
200 Million total from over other overseas markets
120 Million In China
and around 130 Million domestically
Godzilla 2 is probably gonna top out at 450 Million and Lose WB at least 75 M+
Its overseas drop is astonishingly awful....
had it not opened in China...
Godzilla 2 would have been looking at a 65 Million Total international Opening compared to Godzilla 1s 140 Million in The same markets.....
Even lower, 47.7m floppage
shareThat Sunday to Monday correction is rather stunning, for lack of a better word. The word of mouth from those who like it is that they REALLY like Godzilla 2. Seems like Godzilla fans are quite vocal and loud but there just isn't that many of them. It's not like so many have gone and are complaining. Few people actually went out to see the movie.
Theaters will have to decide how many screens they will keep with so much competition so it remains to be seen how this scenario gets any better. Could be a rapid fall for Big "G" the remaining of the summer.
To be fair Godzilla was never going to have wide appeal domestically. I think it's going to depend on foreign receipts to judge success.
shareThe first Godzilla in 2014 could have been a good, successful movie if it had Perry Mason in it, and at least part of the movie was set in a courtroom with Perry defending Godzilla against charges of murdering Rodan.
Prosecuting Attorney: And where were you on the night of February 14th, 2013 when this poor, defenseless mother of 168 was brutally murdered in downtown Tokyo?
Godzilla: EEEEYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Prosecuting Attorney: And isn't it true, you killed her to keep the secret of your affair from getting back to male Rodan? What sort of home-wrecker would do that?!
Perry Mason: Objection, your honor! Badgering the witness!
Judge Judy: Overruled. I'll allow it.
Godzilla (spraying atomic breath in all directions and incinerating the building and everyone inside): EEEEEYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
The End
