I hadn't realized there was any connection between the new Godzilla and the new Kong, although there was a "Godzilla vs. King Kong" movie made in Japan in the early sixties.
I saw "Kong Skull Island" and thought it was set in the recent past as a setup for a franchise set in the modern era, so if they're just pushing King Kong into Godzilla movies then obviously they don't have as much faith in the property as I thought they did.
In a post-credits scene in 'Kong: Skull Island', Conrad and Weaver are detained and recruited by Monarch. They are informed by Brooks and San that Skull Island is just the beginning and that Kong is not the only monster king to roam the world. As proof, they are shown archive footage of cave paintings depicting the monsters Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah.
Apparently, 'Godzilla vs. Kong' is to be released in 2020?
I guess ... purely because of that 2-second reference to Godzilla in a post-credit scene.
I mean, it's not like Monarch were even mentioned in Godzilla. And I have no idea how Kong connects to the modern day, or what the point of connecting these films together as a series is, besides an inevitable fight.
When king kong 2017 came out it was already implied by legendary pictures that Godzilla was going to eventuall meet up with King Kong. We were also disapointed to here we would have to wait till 2019 before another godzilla movie cause King Kong had taken the spot light for a few years. :(
