It's a shame that so many people ridicule this actor's career. Mr. Cage is a very good actor regardless of the crappy scripts he's been offered over the last years.
This movie however was great. He did a terrific job in this film in my opinion
I agree. I thought he was pretty damn good in this movie and it reminded me of why I've been a fan of his work since the 90s. People are too hard on him these days...
They talk about him being out-of-shape and looking rough, but I'll assume that's mostly from kids who don't realize they're not gonna look the way they look right now forever. Unless you're a health nut, a man in his 40s or 50s is gonna gain a little weight. And regardless, it's biology; we get older and produce less testosterone, our metabolism slows, our skin thins and we start looking a little different than when we were in our 20s. It's like people think actors are "washed-up" when they see them aged a little, because we're used to seeing them frozen-in-time in older movies.
And all the stuff about the projects Cage has been taking on recently; give the guy a break. He ran into some hard times (the IRS, debt, whatever). We can't fault someone for working for a living. It might be different if he started showing up in infomercials or tried some cheesy merchandising stunts (e.g. Charlie Sheen), but there's nothing wrong with an actor taking on lower-budget movies to pay the bills. Again, it's called working for a living.
I love the guy to the moon and back. But in the interests of fairness I feel I should point out he actually was in some really weird Japanese commercials x
He never lost it. Every couple of years he puts out a really good performance in a good film. He just does a bunch of crap in between. He's like Samuel L. Jackson.
"This life's hard, man, but it's harder if you're stupid!"
This is why I really miss Roger Ebert. "There are often lists of the great living male movie stars: De Niro, Nicholson and Pacino, usually. How often do you see the name of Nicolas Cage? He should always be up there. He's daring and fearless in his choice of roles, and unafraid to crawl out on a limb, saw it off and remain suspended in air. No one else can project inner trembling so effectively... he always seems so earnest. However improbable his character, he never winks at the audience. He is committed to the character with every atom and plays him as if he were him"
"Cage is a good actor in good movies, and an almost indispensable actor in bad ones."
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down and a Wagging Finger of Shame
The dude partied too hard even for a movie guy and ended up with a massive tax bill so I get that he just takes whatever job he's offered. He's got good acting capacity but you can't polish a turd which is the case of many of his movies of the last decade or so. This one falls somewhere between his better to good ones.
