What people who watched this movie missed so far...

Jim (Nicolas Cage) is probably still alive and planned this brilliantly. Jim knew that the safe was being watched over and that they would never leave alive or could flee. David (Elijah Wood) was tricked in to it and his suspicion toward the end was correct.

it's the perfect getaway, the girl can testify that Jim is dead and since no one is watching but going after David he can steal what he wants from the safe.

In the end when he seems to have been shot and lies in the kitchen I was expecting him to get up and scare David just like he did when he used the improvised explosive from the bullets to get to last inches of the safe. This scene was almost mirrored.

There are some hints :
-Jim father probably knew about the safe and told his son.
-Jim is standing in front of the great world largest gift shop when waiting for the gunseller (reference to the safe ?)
-David is checking his pulse with gloves on.
-Jim was wearing body armor
-Jim had enough bags and a cart, it is hinted that he knew exactly where he was going for.

David is a stoner, low life cop who is not to smart, this is obvious throughout the movie :
-stoner
-cleaning cat litter with a shirt
-Couldn't hold a relationship and sleeps with hookers
-JIm getting him to eat a lemon with tabasco
-Jim getting him to do al the surveillance
-Jim testing him with the russian roulettte routine, getting the 10k from the chinese

Jim is shown as an calculating, charismatic guy who knows what he is doing and is inventive and smart.
-the explanation of how to read a crime scene at the beginning
-going "undercover" in the casino
-using the homeless to take the pictures
-Find the german
-putting sun block on
-shooting the gun seller without blinking
-shooting the "guard" at the appartment and leaving the girl as the witness
-ready to kill a police officer who stumbled upon.

The only thing I miss about these movies
is we don't see any more True Romance, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and this film type of sarcastically realistic gang film-noir,
where every hero must die.
It's a rare gem, and very hard to put the story structure together.

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesnt go away.

This was the twist ending I was expecting. Sadly it wasn't the case. The ending was a total downer.

This is nonsense, he was shot in the head and the other cop checked his pulse. No way he is alive.

Sorry but this doesn't make any sense.

You say David isn't smart, when absolutely none of those points have anything to do with intelligence. Seriously, what does sleeping with a hooker have to do with intelligence? Most of them just point to him being apathetic and/or weak-willed.

What's more, you claim Jim is the "smart" one, by pointing out things like: "ready to kill a police officer who stumbled upon." How could you possibly think that's smart or calculating? It would take the PD less than an hour to figure out one of their officers is MIA. At which point the entire department would descend on that apartment like the wrath of god. Yeah, real smart. David came up with the best solution on the spot and without hesitation.

But your argument as a whole is completely flawed, too. It requires Jim to assume waaay too much. He would have to assume that David would try to kill him. He would also have to assume that David wouldn't happen to, you know, actually kill him in the process. He would also have to assume that nobody from the gang would bother checking on their safe or getting rid of the dead body above their safe before Jim would have enough time to repack a dozen bags of loot. He would also have to assume that he can carry a dozen bags of loot by himself (no van, did you forget that part?) and just walk down the street without anyone noticing him. Criminal masterminds don't bet their lives on a series of flimsy gambles.

Your explanation is full of holes, much like Jim's lifeless corpse.

Agreed. So many people missed it. In the end we see only David's badge and ring being filed as evidence. Jim is back to his job, there was a second guy but no one knows who he is except for the girl who can't say anything since the ''bad guys'' cannot call the police for being robbed of stolen goods. Jim pulled of a perfect plan. THis certainly requires the second watch where all these details that you have pointed are more obvious. He treats David as an idiot all the way through and David asks him that at one point. Jim was prepared, David was just a fall guy. Jim's plan just showed that no matter how wrong it goes it is in fact perfect. Loved this movie, too bad it is a flop.

I think you're right. He knew how big of a heist it would be and he knew that people would be watching. So he set up waters to take the fall. When he was shot and Waters was getting a pulse, his hand was on the gun. So if he felt a pulse he could have just shot him in surprise...like he surprised him before. I do think he had plans that would include both of them getting away, but he also had plans to make waters take the fall. The one clue that made it clear...to me is the drill being put in evidence. They had taken it apart completely and was in the bag, it also was not in the van at any point once waters left with the girl. So that means that someone put it back together from the apartment, which means that there should've been another badge, which means stone's body wasn't found at the scene.

I don't easily buy into the notion of Cage pulling this off as many on this thread have stated, but I refute the notion that E. Wood positively identified Cage as being dead. Wood took approximately 5 seconds to check him with his left hand approximate to Cage's trachea. You would never check there for a pulse, since I have seen many patients die in healthcare. However, he may have in those 5 seconds been looking for breath sounds which is not the best way to determine if someone has expired, especially for only 5 seconds. Also, someone please instruct me as to where the fatal bullet entered Cage's body because it surely wasn't his head? There is hardly any blood to be seen while Cage is laying on the floor, and what you do see on the left side of his face and at his throat are blood smears. These blood smears could have resulted from the flesh wound at the left side of his neck, the same area that Cage was rubbing with his left gloved hand moments earlier..
