the black guy being gay adds absolutely nothing to this story

other than that, this show is horribly boring.

He's gay in the books. So...

Hap being straight adds nothing to the story.

I disagree. He has ex-wife, Trudy.

him being gay in the book too doesn't mean anything. the book author shouldnt have done that. i often see them making the black guy gay so they can get all the demographics they need because they don't need to have him be a love interest for any viewer. he's just a novelty. that's why ugly black women get way more acting roles than pretty ones.

if it wasn't such a huge trope with american writers, then it wouldn't be a big deal. it's just ridiculous how much they use it.

Raoul the nurse was a love interest in one of the episodes. So you're wrong.

By the way, I think Leonard's homosexuality is an interesting subversion from stereotypical gay roles. This is not the first time Michael Kenneth Williams played an unconventional gay man before on TV. Check his homo thug character Omar Little on The Wire (2002).

Beauty is subjective. So your argument is moot.

One gay main character in a sea of heterosexuals? Yes, that's SO ridiculous. 

Anyway, I doubt homosexual themes is a huge trope with American writers. I've read my fair share of American novels and short stories which had NO gay subtext.

"the book author shouldnt have done that"

The author can do whatever he likes. As a point of fact, this series was based on a book written in 1990. There were not a lot of gay black main characters in crime novels being written in that era. What I truly love about your comment is that you're trying to sound educated by talking about tropes and demographics, and yet you only come across as an ignorant person trying to make a pointless criticism. The character being gay doesn't have to add or take anything away from the show anymore than any other character being straight. That's just who he is, and it's not like there aren't actual gay black people out there. A basic character trait isn't a trope. A trope is a plot element repeated over and over, like when the hero shows up at the very last minute or when someone falls down while running from a serial killer. If you want to see what a "gay black trope" would look like, watch the movie Dirty Grandpa.

Otherwise what we're left with is a show about two straight white southern guys getting into trouble in the 80s. Like that would make the show any more interesting.

Also, if you're going to attempt critical literary analysis and tell us what accomplished writers should and shouldn't be doing, it would benefit you at the very least to pretend that you know what capital letters and apostrophes are.

Would you rather have Leonard be all girly like a typical gay dude?

reply

His uncle was an ass to him because he was gay. In the first episode when they were all in the truck and he made a nasty remark to Leonard about it and Hap totally defended Leonard was the moment I knew how much they truly loved one another as brothers and it made their bond even stronger when other people would ask and Hap didn't give a *beep* Plus, it's in the books.

What SheHaw said.

Why does EVERY aspect of a person need to "add something" to a story? So a character should be played by an Asian person ONLY when there is a reason? A needs to mention they are Jewish and THERE HAS TO BE A REASON FOR IT in the plot?? He is gay. Gay people exist. Not everyone on the planet is white... or straight.

That being said, his being gay DOES become relevant.. and IS relevant. However, even if it didnt.... so what?

reply

Leonard being a country music fan adds absolutely nothing to the story either. But you don't see me whining about it. Geezus.

reply

all show have to add some PC today.

reply

And yet it's based on a 26 years old book...

IMDb: A place where actors are complimented for their acting, actresses for their boobs

reply

pc started it in the 90's.

reply

PC? By not just having white straight males and women in them?

reply

Being black, and gay and fighting in vietnam, is the polar opposite of the straight, white, draft dogging Hap, half of it is social commentary of the political landscape post vietnam,
The country records just compound the irony with love for music created by people who were stereotypically(really this isn't a word?) racist

Others have commented on your post title so I won't bother.

But 'this show is horribly boring'? I'm guessing 98 is your birth year so I'm almost inclined to give you a pass because of your youth.

This was an excellent piece of work. Told in six tight and tense episodes. Satisfying in that things were tied up, but with a nice lead on to Season 2.

Give me this over something like How To Get Away With Murder. A lot might seem to happen but what amounts to the same story 30 episodes on is no nearer a conclusion and about to lumber through another 15.
