Just proves the futility of medical treatments - Spoilers obviously.....

So the 1 year survival rate is almost zero - then why amputate the leg and have the patient suffer for months and then live reduced quality of life.

Let them enjoy the few remaining months with dignity and on their own terms. Most modern chemotherapy (not in this case of course) is a death sentence.

It's not zero, is it? When given a sentence like that most people would grasp at any straw they can. And the movie made it pretty clear that he was a fighter, not a quitter.

Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something.
