First review

I found this critic's review on Twitter and, unfortunately, it's negative... He gave the movie 2/5 stars.

It contains a few spoilers about the premise of the movie but there is nothing too revealing.

The reviewer states "Ditching most of the new elements added in the last instalment Underworld: Blood Wars repeats the same motifs and mistakes of the rest of the series. the latest film adds greyed out visuals, muddy action and unintentional hilarity to mar yet another tale of Lycans and Vampires duking it out. It's high time for the series to go to its eternal rest ."

critics have never liked underworld.what they say has no bearing to fans.

This is undeniably true. For them to say "more of the same" is me than enough for me.

It's essentially more of the same, yes, and I agree with a lot of points of the review about clunky lines and wasted potential. But that didn't make the movie less enjoyable for me, plus it's way better than Awakening.

I still hope that we will get more lore, I don't care if it's movies, TV series or books, but I'd love to know more about Amelia for example

3 more reviews have been posted (from what I was able to find) and again, they're all very negative. I will see the movie tomorrow and I'll come back with my own impreessions then.

Are these movie critics or normal moviegoers like you and me? Reviewers have never been kind to the Underworld movies so this would be nothing new.

I believe they are critics, but I was mostly looking for comparisons to the previous movies, and they are all saying Blood Wars is a cash-grab and that it pales when compared to the first ones. I can't wait to see it tomorrow, I don't have high expectations, but I hope it won't be the atrocity that Awakening was. These movies are guilty pleasures for me, but Awakening was just a big mistake...

Critics hate them, have always hated them, and will always hate Underworld movies, no matter what.

It's beyond me what they're expecting from these movies. They are guilty pleasures and give what we expect to watch: action, blood and gore, Vampires vs Lycans, fun scenes with characters like Selene.

Fans don't care about critics for that kind of movie. I don't even think critics should review Underworld movies.

We'll never get a fresh Underworld on RT, or a fresh RE movie on RT or a fresh Saw movie on RT. Sometimes we have franchises that have a long life thanks to fan input. I love these movies, and critics really can't change that vision in that regard.

reply

kobold-23 I totally agree with you and I can see why the critics never liked them. Yes, these movies can't be considered too good and I think we all can agree with that, but they're fun action-horror movies and that's why I can consider them guilty pleasures. Same with Resident Evil, I've watched these 2 franchises so many times and I could go back and watch them any time because they're fun and that's all that matters, that's what we watch them for and we know what to expect.

Well, of course, that doesn't include Awakening and Afterlife (from RE), because these weren't even fun, only dull and bad from start to finish. (My opinion)

Thanks! I'll have a separate board in a few hours answering people's questions and dicussing the film with those who have already seen it, maybe you'll attend :)

reply

I can only attend if it's spoiler free. I'd love to join in.

I'll be careful with the spoilers for those who haven't seen the movie :) don't worry, the spoilers will be covered so you won't find out anything that you don't want to know.

Excellent, thanks!

I just came back from the screening, you can check my new board and we'll discuss there :)

i agree w/ Bu54Lb, "professional" movie critics have never liked these films. even though i listen to NO ONE other than myself (when it comes to seeing a movie a want to see) i'd put more stock into what regular people (like us on the board) say about the film over some movie critic any day of the week. i'm very excited for this movie!

I've just read the German one and that wasn't a critic who was critical of the movie because they always are critical of Underworld. The person actually had some very valid points which I happen to share.

The person compared it to Awakening, which they think missed the mark already but was at least a fun action film. That's more generous than I was of Awakening, it's a movie I hate through and through. They also compared it to Resident Evil but makes it a point that he/she loved the first UW movies and the expectations with that franchise were higher as a result than RE. It's the same for me, UW 1-3 >>>>>>>>>>RE 1-5.

He/she talks about how convenient it is to repeat the best stuff of the franchise at the beginning for new viewers and get an unknown director in order keep the budget low. Basically between all the filler (for nostalgia reasons), dumb dialogue and relentless action it's not good. And even the action wasn't that good. The person also made a point that Menzies and Dance aren't given much to work with (something I have heard from Russian moviegoers already).

The critic ends it with...so much potential in this franchise that was ruined by the people in charge.

Does that sound like a critic who just wants to crap on UW in general?

reply

I never bothered to read that review, or any other crtics' opinion for that matter.

I know better than to trust those idiots, having been to the preview screening myself.

The new movie has the styles of 1 2 4, yet it is filled with so much innovation at the same time. Those who say "same old motif" clearly paid no attention. I even doubt they watched the movie.

As for those fans who call Awakening "atrocity", I feel sorry for them. Awakening is one of my favorite movies of all time, and they fail to see its merits.

Why would you feel sorry for people who a) have a different opinion from yours and b) whose brains demand more than relentless action with no plot?

I feel sorry for people like you who have issues with accepting other peoples opinions/taste.

reply

I feel sorry because they are missing out something great. That's it. It's OK to have different opinions as long as you can back them up.

Underworld Awakening is never about "relentless action with no plot". The pace is just right. There are emotional dialogues. There are interactions between key characters and there are unexpected twists, and the story is adequately complex even though there are not layers after layers of stories like the first film.

Alright, I'm catching another preview screening of Blood Wars in 40 minites.

Did you see an extended version of the movie? Otherwise I don't get what you are talking about. There are no twists, the plot can be summoned up in 1 sentence and the dialogue seemed to be written by a 10 year old. I guess the action is ok if that's all you care about. Well that and KB in leather/latex. Anything else sucked for me but there is no need to feel sorry for me and others. We just watched this franchise for other reasons.

reply

I don't get what you are talking about.

Hehe. Watch it again, which I highly doubt you will do. Then what is the point of discussing further?

Sum up the plot using one sentence. You said you could.

You said the dialogue seemed to be written by a 10-year-old. Well, how to take you seriously then when you sound like one?

Surely we watch for different reasons. You only see what you want to see, and therefore you think you saw only mindless action.

Let's not waste time talking nonsense. It is better to spend the time on watching Blood Wars in the cinema, which I will do.

reply

That's just my opinion (I am the one who called Awakening an "atrocity"). Of course that for some people, it might be the franchise's best, for various reasons. I hated it and I have my reasons. There's nothing wrong with it being one of your favorite movies and I'm glad you enjoyed it more than I did. I can't wait to see Blood Wars tonight and we'll discuss then :)

Guys, I finally saw the movie and I'm ready to answer your questions and discuss the movie.
