Why the hate for awakening ?

It was full of action, what would have made it better ? More slow scenes of talking ? What's their to talk about the movie gets to the point. More Michael? Michael is useless ..Selene is always saving him.

If all you care about is the Resident Evil style of movies then Awakening is great. Same with Blood Wars I imagine.

If however you care about lore/myth, relationships, characters, story and plot more than action, bad dialogue, forgettable characters and barely any plot then the post-ROTL movies aren't for you. At least that's been my observation when reading on several boards.

I for one don't care about the action in the slightest. The action for me was always a by-product of the fact that this is a war so blood shed is bound to happen. And that's how they handled it in 1+3. 2 was already a little too action heavy and less focused on the other stuff. But it's still good.

As for Michael. You act like Eve wasn't a constant damsel in Awakening. Michael is more powerful than Selene an that's why they made him a) a damsel and b) kicked him from the franchise. Can't outshine that chick in the glossy leather.

Also I prefer the gritty, goth look of especially 1+3. Awakening looks too much like a CBM.

CBM?

reply

superharrybird, i think CBM stands for comic book movie but i could be totally wrong.

Rjana, sometimes it just depends on my mood. there are times when mindless action type movies are exactly what i need/want and sometimes i want a character rich/well written story focused type of film. and sometimes i want BOTH in the same film. but i understand where you're coming from. :)

reply

Well if I want mindless action with a female lead, got Resident Evil for that. Don't need another franchise there. UW was more story/character driven with a little action on the side. I found 2 a little too heavy on action already and the character/story part suffered for it. Oh well it's too late anyway. They decided to go the Resident Evil route post ROTL and there is no going back.

i love AWAKENING. it's a very good ACTION movie. story-wise/script-wise as a sequel in the UNDERWORLD film series it's a bit of a mess though. the storyline in that movie is 1 ply tissue paper thin. as much as i love that movie it literally feels like they were writing the script as they were shooting the film and adjusting/re-writing it minute to minute. to not have Speedman's Michael (the real Speedman and not some stand in) is the biggest "WTF?!" and i can't help but think that maybe Scott & Kate either hooked up (meaning maybe she cheated on Len at the time) or Scott and Len (or Scott & Len and Kate) had a major/HUGE falling out...a big enough falling out to F up (and make pointless now) the whole Selene/Michael storyline since the first film.

Len didn't want Speedman in Awakening. He is on record saying that. Because the guy isn't talented enough to handle 2 relationships at once apparently. So until I hear otherwise I'm going to assume that there will be some crap excuse for the handling of Michael's character in BW as well.

my problem was that it didn't have the goth atmosphere. I loved the idea of a dystopian future, if the's mixed that type of atmosphere with the same mood and style of the underverse. it felt like neither. it felt like they were just in the 'real world to me with an occasional dip here and there of the good two.
