Why throw a newbie who directs tv shows to do this movie?! Makes no sense why risk that for this series? Seeing how this is a original idea and it has success with every movie why make a newbie make it, should have just gotten the last director for awakening
She did an amazing job. The movie's full of great shots, perfect angles, camera motion, etc. It looks like a moving comic book, more so than the previous installments.
Hmmmm... wut??? Granted, this isn't based on an existing comic book series, but from the very beginning of this movie series the makers have said that they wanted to create an otherworldly experience, inspired by comic books. This was addressed in the movie commentary of at least the first movie, when both story and style (blue tinge, angles, etc.) were mentioned. And in order to enhance that comic book type world, they insisted on having no humans in this world at all. (Again, from the movie commentary)
Ironically, Awakening, the series' chapter that you deem "the most comic book style chapter" has that very same element that they wanted to keep from Underworld for as long as possible.

The first and third movie, both ran with that gritty, gothic style that is befitting of a movie dealing with vamps and lycans. But there was nothing comic booky about the way those movies looked, despite the blue filters.
Comic book style doesn't make me feel like I'm watching the UNDERworld. Makes me feel like I'm watching a motion comic.
Agreed, KazLuigi. The director has worked as a DP on several films and is quite talented, but she didn't write the script. It would take a miracle to change a worn-out franchise into something fresh and vibrant. She did what she could do given the material.
