This movie comes out next week, why so little advertisement?
Do Sony marketing execs want this to do bad and sweep the entire franchise under the carpet?

wouldn't surprise me. maybe they just don't know how to properly end it. no telling what goes on behind the scenes though.
shareAt this rate I wouldn't be surprised if this is the *final* entry in the series, forget about loose ends it has or what they might've hoped to do with the franchise later on, financially its gonna struggle hard.

Its already been out several weeks internationally, and its an ok film. But it feels more like a DVD film, despite the budget. They probably think its not good enough for a huge marketing campaign when it already has to compete with other similar genre flix such as Resident Evil, Arrivals, Rogue One etc, in this period. In other words, the studio doesn't seem too confident in it and maybe are cutting their loses. Just be happy its getting a release, and hasn't been shelved, dusted off and then re-shelved again like The Ring 3 (Rings).

Marketing costs a lot of money. Fans of the franchise know this film is coming and they are going to see it anyway. And even the best marketing campaign would lure very few new viewers into the cinema to see a fifth installment of a franchise if they have not seen any of the previous films. The cost/result ratio of a marketing campaign for such a franchise (especially in a niche genre) is just not worth it.
It is kind of sad, because this is an entertaining and decent film, and in a way it is geared a bit towards letting new people into the franchise without any previous knowledge.
I am a bear of very little brain, and long words bother me. 4
Well said. Fans are going to watch it no matter what.
I've seen it. It is the final chapter of Selene's story. But it does have interesting ideas that might lead to spinoffs in the future.
i live in the Pacific Northwest and starting about 5 days ago, i started seeing tv spots for this movie (FINALLY!). these past 3 days or so they've been running more and more tv spots. i've seen 4 in the last hour and a half alone. so at least promotion is somewhat in motion.
EDIT:
there is a tv spot for the film airing right this second as i'm typing this! :)
I'm visiting in the US right now and have been for about 3 weeks. I don't have a car (or public transportation), so I spend most of my time at home during the day. I've only seen one preview for it on TV. Glad to hear they're starting to show more. But still, is there no press junket or anything?
Go with your heart, buddy. Our brains only screw things up.
They're busy focused on the next terrible Resident Evil film. After the dismal results of Passengers, SONY is trying to focus on the one franchise than never fails with BO returns despite how mediocre it is. Underworld is NOT going to do that, so they're concerned with the other sh!tty franchise that produces favorable results.

I think you are half right. The last 2 Resident Evil films both made LESS than the last Underworld in the US, but performed a lot better overseas. Still, the Resident Evil films have been on a downturn domestically for the past 3 films, while the Underworld films have actually increased their box office domestically every film since the first one from what I can tell.
I think what is really going on here is Screen Gems knew they weren't going to pour a ton into either movie, so they decided to put more $$ into Resident Evil because it has a bigger budget and more at stake. Also I think Sony knew Kate Beckinsale was done with this franchise (she split with her husband who directed the first) so they saw no reason to even try to make it profitable. She was the only thing keeping this franchise going, lets be honest. If she isn't coming back the next film would have likely failed without her, regardless of how well this film does.
It sucks because I love this franchise despite it's flaws. I wasn't sure we were going to get this one, so I am happy it is getting a theatrical release. I will be there opening night to try to see this with a full packed theater :)

How you can call RE mediocre and defend the last 2 UW movies (Awakening and Blood Wars) is beyond me. I'm with you on RE but lets be honest here. Awakening was totally tailored towards the RE crowd, not the UW crowd. Heck, Awakening was the same freaking movie as Retribution. Leading lady gets captured, breaks out and encounters a little girl to care about halfway through. Add some utterly forgettable one-note characters, no plot, lots of action, bad dialogue and acting.
