So Varga was not ....

... really a villain? He seemed to be following Semira's orders because he felt that was best for the Eastern Coven. When David's right to lead the coven was established, Varga followed him instead and fought side-by-side in the big battle against the covens.

I can't imagine that Selene is too thrilled with him because he helped Semira drain Selene's blood. otoh, Selene died (or went to the other place or whatever) and that's the sort of thing that changes one's perspective. Certainly she was able to meet her daughter in her visions - and she clearly had been feeling her daughter's rejection throughout the movie.

i think Varga is loyal only to Varga. he IMO definitely can't be trusted. i assume he'll have to pay for what he did by killing all those cadets since Selene saw the whole thing. nothing can justify what he did to them.

reply

Either way, he did kill a bunch of death dealers. He should be exiled, at the least.

reply

GSworldbuilder, were they full fledged death dealers or death dealers in training? i can't remember.

reply

They were young raw death dealer recruits.

They were trainees.

Aside from the fact that it wasn't Varga's decision to kill the trainees, both the council and David would have been toast if Varga hadn't acknowledged David's superior claim. I don't think they're gonna be in much of hurry to punish him. David went out of his way to protect Varga from the sunlight and then Varga tackled Marius to defend David. They be bros now.

Selene is a different matter, yes, but she's loyal to the coven despite everything and she'll listen to David. Plus at the beginning of the movie both Eve and Michael were lost to her. Now she has Eve back.

Not that it would be an excuse in the eyes of the other vampires, but it's obvious to the viewer that Varga was in a sexually and emotionally abusive relationship with Semira. That's sort of what I mean by he's not a true villain. He doesn't have the agency to be one because he's being manipulated & controlled by Semira. Yes I know the wiki description calls him the manipulator. Wiki got it wrong.

And that makes it OK?

Whatever control he was under from Semira, he's responsible for his actions; he willingly killed two dozen vampires for a scheme he was in on and turned his back on when it suited his interests to do so.

Killing him for his actions may be too much, but like I said, at least exile the bastard.

I was making the distinction from a Vampire pov not a Human one.

He wasn't that willing but you're right he didn't protest.

turned his back on when it suited his interests to do so.

More like he is loyal to the coven and the coven's true leader. We don't know that much about Varga's backstory but we do know that he was unhappy with some of her actions as a leader.

In addition, Varga is in the middle of fighting. He is front and center in protecting the coven AND tackles Marius, super-lycan, to protect David. If Varga were in it strictly for himself, he would have been a bit more strategic about covering his own ass.

Varga did what he was supposed to. He is loyal to whoever the true leader of the coven is. He thought that was Semira; he was wrong. When he realized who David was he immediately pledged allegiance to him and risked his life for David on several occasions. I don't think Varga is a man who holds loyalty for people; he values concepts more highly, like tradition and order. He killed the trainees under Semira's orders. Had David ordered it instead, he would have done it as well. I think David understands this, even if Varga had a hand in killing his father (Semira dealt the blow, but still).

you said it better than I did. 👏

Thomas rather easily backhanded Varga out of the fight. One could hand wave that Varga wasn't trying very hard.
