So I don't know how much Underworld normally makes in the UK...

But oh my god, coming in at 11th place with only slightly more money than a one-off showing of the Sherlock finale is embarassing for an established franchise. Honestly though the film was barely marketed here, I didn't even realise it was released on Friday here.

Wow, that is really low compared to previous instalments.

The film's quality is definitely not the issue here, since it has been praised to be "the best one yet" by fans.

The issue might lie in the marketing department. The absence of advertising seems to be worldwide, except in India, of course.

You really can't compare as Blood Wars is only showing in limited release.

If it's playing in limited release, it's a sign that the distributor doesn't have faith in it and that they're not putting the same money into it to promote it like before, so it's certainly fair to compare it to wider releases. People forget that even just having the movie in theaters costs the studio money. It could actually be less of a risk to barely have it playing, just sticking it where it's MOST likely to make money, than it is to have it everywhere and playing to mostly empty theaters. Still, not a good sign for its chances.

RE will do better, I think. I've mentioned it in other threads, but when I saw UW, there were no posters or anything for it. However, I did see a big thing for RE. Sony seems to be putting all the promo into RE, too. They've been going all over the world doing premieres (and more of the cast has been doing promo for it), but UW didn't even get an LA premiere.

Historically, both series have done really mediocre business in the US, but RE seems to really clean up overseas, while Underworld hasn't. Like I said, the more limited international release could just be a sign of Sony kind of giving up on it.

RE being based on a popular video game is automatically going to lead to a higher box-office. Plus getting a China release helps.
