Throughout the movie there was an undercurrent of religious obsession. Which is unusual in French films as France, as a society, is very secular - it's not fundie dominated like the US is.
Michele's father had been a religious fanatic, making the sign of the cross on the foreheads of the neighborhood children had creeped out their parents. Are there hints Michele was sexually abused by her father as a child? Making the sign of the cross before attacking her maybe?
But it seemed like religion triggered something in her. When she says to Patrick she was excommunicated.. His wife's piety also, I think, underscored this. How the wife says after he is killed "you gave him something he needed". Maybe reverts back to Michele's relationship with her father?
Maddeningly ambiguous this film..
