How disturbing is the rape scene(s)?

I know it's a subjective matter, but in your opinion, would this movie be difficult to watch for people terrified of sexual violence? Is it graphic and shocking, beyond the obvious nature of the crime? Basically, would you warn anyone against watching it if people had personal history or fears of sexual violence?

reply

I think the implications of the movie are almost more extreme than the sexual violence they show on screen. That said, I watched this movie with my mom, and we both found it fascinating and not that uncomfortable. It was still awkward, but this movie successfully sidesteps every humdrum thriller trope, and delivers what it promises when it set up these characters.

I'm reminded vaguely of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. That was an incredibly upsetting scene, but the book/films earned it with the strong characters and story they set up. This does too, but (thankfully for me) shows a great deal less.

That's EXACTLY what I thought of... The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Neither scene is exactly "Fun" to watch, however, they are necessary to push the emotional narrative of the film. You invest in the characters because of what they go through. It's certainly risqué but Verhoven is not one to hold back, especially now that he's allowed the leeway he didn't have in America but it's not like a Von Trier film... If that makes sense? Not a slight to Lars, I'm actually a big fan, he's just even more "No Holds Barred" than Verhoven. They just have different ways of going about the Subject Matter, although both push boundaries and I applaud that.

I do not see how any of you could sit through what I see as ART FILM PORNO TRASH. Watching Huppert be raped, watching the repeat of the scene over and over, watching her lack of outrage and her nonchalance in this situation makes this film a total outrage. I walked out and will never trust any of the movie critics (all of them) again who praised this brutal and absurd exercise in male rape fantasy.

You seem like an intelligent and pleasant fellow. :restrains mocking laughter:

Her character obviously suppressed her outrage and anger. She very much wanted revenge (hence her day dream of bashing the rapist's head in), but she didn't show it on the outside as overtly as a younger woman might have. Given that this is a Paul Verhoeven film, I think it eventually went to pretty twisted places toward the end. But the first scene is about as realistic of a rape scene as I've ever seen on film. There's nothing ornamental about it, and it doesn't really cut away from the scene. I think it's sets the tone of the rest of the film. But I could see why no woman who has ever been raped would ever want to see this film. It's very disturbing.

Don't bother trying to reason or explain simple things to him. His mentality and behavior suggests he'd be better off posting with the losers on the "Ghostbusters" page.

Have the seen the film? Its not a matter of one rape scene, and the actions of both parties as the movie progresses is as insulting towards rape victims as Ive seen in films. And no,I dont like Michael Bay,and I have been a fan of Verhoven since the days of Spetters and The Fourth Man.

"Art film porno trash" - well, at least you're able to approach the subject in a balanced manner.

The truth is that irreparably damaged people find other irreparably damaged people in which to act out their dysfunctions with.

Most people in psych wards don't end up there because of psychological distress caused by life events, but because of chemical or biological imbalances.

Huppert has made a career of taking on challenging roles such as this, which display REAL dysfunction, which many, many people deal with in real life.

Just look at the popularity of S&M-type experiences that have become almost mainstream. People make their outer world reflect their inner world, no matter the social acceptability of it.

I totally agree....this film doesnt deserve an oscar nomination!!

reply

To the OP, yes, I would warn against it. Don't watch it (the person who has personal history/fear of sexual violence). The break ins/violence/rape were very intense, especially the one near the beginning (because yes it happens more than once).

I have seen the accused, prince of tides, and recently eye for and eye and oh God! the rape scenes in this just terrified me to the point of nightmare. Prince of Tides made me throw up and I never saw it again. Still rape scenes as sickening and as disturbing as it is, in my opinion it is needed in order to get people to realizes it is real and it happens.

reply

Prince of Tides? The Barbra Streisand movie??

You should never go outside without a helmet.

reply

Yeah, that rape scene did it all for me. I try to stay away from it.

reply

I'd like to see you watch "Irréversible". :)

reply

Yeah, IMO it would be difficult to watch. The first scene is not that graphic but there is a violent abrupt flashback and then several more rapes.

Not a movie for those easily triggered.

reply

It may be a hard watch at times but the film is very aware of itself. It's a Verhoeven flick after all.

reply

Look if you have fears of sexual violence you should just avoid this movie at all costs.

On a personal level,

and this is kind of a SPOILER,

I found the rape scenes less hard to watch than others because it turns out after the movie progresses that the sex is more or less consentual. Plus they're not that graphic and the victim is not a likeable character.

The worst rape scene I've seen in the one in Once Upon a Time In America, the one with Robert De Niro's character in the car.

On a scale of 1-10, where that movie is a 10, I'd rate this as a 6.

"Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man..."

reply

Thank you all, I really appreciate all the responses. I'm glad I asked. I won't feel bad for deciding to avoid this movie.
