This movie had one of the higher "horror movie" openings in a long time (around $30m domestically, which is very good for this genre).
That's remarkable for a movie that only had a $1 million budget. It appears people who laughed at the trailers (as we all did) still went to see it. Maybe the low IMDB ratings were made by a lot of people who never saw the movie and wrote it off?
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one. Do I dare say it gave me flashbacks to the same novel excitement you got seeing movies like Hitchcock's Rope (one long uninterrupted take) and Lifeboat (all taking place in one location).
[although technically Rope was comprised of 10 minute takes cleverly pieced together, the physical limit of cameras at the time]
But Unfriended was so unique in how it made you stay in one spot -- essentially experiencing everything from one screen. I think the producer mentioned that he was toying with the idea of trying out other genres (action, romance, etc) using this method. I wouldn't mind checking those movies if they're ever made.
I went from a staunch disbeliever to a believer. And if it turns out gimmicky and wears out its welcome, this style will naturally die off. But right now, it's so unique and actually refreshing, I think it deserves a couple more shots.
