Parents/family

Where were all the parents of these teens..?
2 of the dads (I believe Blaire's and Mitch's) were out drinking..
But how about the rest of them..?
And how about their moms.. or any brothers/sisters..

6 different teens, 6 different houses and no single relative at home..?

Parents/family don't factor into your online/skype life so they don't factor in the narrative. Call it poetic license, but to me that's the sort of logic the film seemed to be working on. I know I never once questioned it.

I was hoping things would work out for her. She was a good friend of mine.

That doesn't have anything to do with it..
If you and your friends get threatened and killed when you're online you're not going to ask them for help, but instead you're going to ask a stranger online (who thinks it's a joke) to call the police too?

Poetic license has everything to do with it. You're applying real-life logic to a film that works its own set of principles from the ground up as means to express an idea, IMO.

They have no family/friends for the same reason they don't simply shut down their computers as anybody in real life would. Point is, they're addicted (hence no shutting down computer), they're shut out from the world around them (hence no family), and their gut-response to getting preyed upon online is... to get someone online to call the police (!). It's silly from a real-life character slant, but it's very much deliberate as means to express these characters' psychological situation.

Perhaps the parents were not an option because they would have to reveal all of the terrible things they did in the process of getting help.

And they have an exam the next day, that's another reason I didn't like this.

Felt like watching a Peanuts (Charlie Brown) movie. No grown ups anywhere.

I just watched this on Netflix and I had that question too. I kept wondering where are the parents or anyone else.
