Why Was the Fictional Location in France?.

The firm was shot in Malta. Why was the fictional location in France. The plot would have worked just as well on Malta. Maybe so Jolie and Pitt could collectively show off their French language skills?

To me it seems like it's an ode to French films where the wife buddies up with the mistress. Or maybe the location and French being a language of love is used to juxtapose Vanessa and Roland's lack of love in their relationship. I think it is used for contrast.
