The first one I liked because it was found a VHS tapes. The number two started use compiled footage or footage from other mediums (like and Eye camera that inexplicably picks up sound?). This one the first freaking segment was compiled footage edited together to make a movie. I've already done my tirade about how found footage movies now aren't about any found footage at all but this one is ridiculous
I noticed a trend in some of these types of movies lately where instead of just using a handheld video cam, now they also utilize security cameras, second and third party cameras, traffic cameras and even audience perspective in the interest of telling the story. I think after the Paranormal movies, the filmmakers have realized how ridiculous it is to have the cameraman be part of the story when they should be running for their lives. It's a flawed gimmick.
I think it should still be "found footage" and it should still be on VHS tapes, like in the first two. Hence the name, "VHS."
I can understand the eye camera footage on VHS, I can understand helmet footage on VHS. I didn't care for the movie-style magician video, or the random way the filmmakers just threw in the other stories' videos.
The first movies had people entering a premises looking for a specific tape that caused something to happen to those who watched it, a la "The Ring." While looking through the other tapes, we see the other stories. That made sense.
This movie? A guy obsessed with his girlfriend who then films himself chasing after an ice cream truck, with random video footage cutting in and out? It should've been called "Crap."
How so? The magician footage didn't look like it came from a handheld camera, helmet camera, or anything else like that?
Also, when was anyone watching any VHS videotapes throughout this movie? They weren't. This movie's wraparound story made zero sense as to why the other videos were being shown. It also made zero sense as to why the ghost in the machine was trying to make its stupid cell phone video go viral.
Had the filmmakers taken the "secret tape" from one and two, and the ghost in the machine made it go viral on youtube, Amazon, FB, and more? Then yeah, this would've been a helluva lot closer to the series and what I described. Instead, it's a horrible piece of junk that's all over the place.
I'm saying that it followed the idea of people watching the filmed stuff and something happening to them, only this time it was happening to lots of people.
The magician footage didn't look like it came from a handheld camera, helmet camera, or anything else like that?
It doesn't matter since the idea behind these movies doesn't even make sense in the first place.
None of the segments except for the last story in the first movie and the wraparound from the first movie don't have the appropriate film quality for something that's supposed to be on a vhs tape and the one that doesn't look like it's kept well at that.
How do those tape get such clear quality, I have no idea.

The others videos are being shown because it's implied people watch that stuff on their cellphones etc.
It also made zero sense
You can say the same thing about the other wraparound segments in the series and even some of the stories. reply share
No, you can't say the same about the other wraparound stories. In one and two, people stumble into homes surrounded by VHS tapes. One has a body and one is looking for someone.
In the first one, one of the intruders even mentions something about this one tape in particular. While trying to find this one tape, that seems to have supernatural powers, they watch the VHS tapes. That's why we, the audience, see that footage. The same with the second movie. Someone is looking for someone who was reported missing. They find the VHS tapes. The people watch them which is how we, the audience, get to see the footage as well. At the end of that one, we see the missing person making his own video. That implies he found the same tape the intruders were looking for in the first one. How so? Well the dead guy in the first one had a tape. He was dead. Then he walked around and got the intruders. This guy watched the tape. Offed himself. Came back afterwards. The girl watching even had issues.
This third one? The things you say were implied? Desperately trying to connect the dots on that. Error on the filmmakers part. Could they be anymore obsessed with the girlfriend??? Saying that these other videos are thrown in because it's implying others watch it on their phones? Then they should've had random group messages with video links. Throw a fricken hint, something. Because watching it all from the guy's phone, cutting in and out like a VHS tape? That's not how videos are saved on phones. They should've done like they did in "Unfriended." Random texts, messages, links, windows, and pop-ups. The writer and filmmakers need to go back to school to learn how to tell a story.
Just because it's not about people finding tapes etc. doesn't mean they follow the same thing of "you watch the tapes, something happens to you".
Saying that these other videos are thrown in because it's implying others watch it on their phones? Then they should've had random group messages with video links.
I assumed the things that appear on phones etc. with the counter are related to the vidoes.
There's that one person staring at the phone with his nose bleeding during one part, I asssumed that's like with every one else, I thoguht that's what they were going for.

I think most of the videos in this series don't work the way they should. Are you telling me those tapes that aren't kept well have such clear quality with random "vhs distortion" effects sometimes and those are the only things that affect the quality?
They don't follow their own rules well.
But yeah, this is a bad movie, they obviously didn't put much thought into it.

The wrap around in the first combined vhs recording and digital for no reason. The first one had a video recording from glasses, why was this transferred to vhs? Why was the skype segment of the the first one transferred to vhs? Not to mention Second Honeymoon and Tuesday the 17th were obviously not filmed on vhs.
