How bad is this film?

I was late to the party with the first two VHS's..watched em on Netflix last month and loved em. But I'm seeing an overwhelming amount of hate for this movie; and most of the bad reviews come from people who have seen and even enjoyed the first two. Is it even worth watching? What makes it so much worse than the previous films?

Well, movies are subjective and even though most of the people who have seen this dislike it, it shouldn't deter you from watching it yourself to make your own opinion. In my case...

It really depends on what you liked in the other two. If you liked them for the horror... There's none in Viral.

If you liked them for the execution... Meh, it's a hit-and-miss with Viral. The segment quality gap is much higher here than it was in the previous two installments. Everything in Viral seems polished (in a bad way), whereas in the first two everything felt raw, ferocious and vicious. The tapes all had gruesome murders and graphic images, sometimes very explicit (the throat slits were my favourites). Everything in Viral seems almost like a PG-13 version of the previous installments. It felt like a kiddies version. Whereas in the first ones you had the "succubus demon" segment, the "apocalyptic cult" segment and the "serial killer" segments, every segment in Viral seems like a kid's, Twilight Zone-esque version of the franchise. You have "Ohhh, the magician segment!", "Ohhh, the alternate dimension segment" (this one is pretty cool if you haven't been spoiled) and the "Ohhh, spooky skeletons!" segment. You get the ideia. Also, the effects are really, and I mean, REALLY bad once you notice them. I'm talking about the CGI, the animatronics and puppetry all look good. They wanted to do something so different and innovative that they ended up shooting themselves in the foot.

Also, the VHS feel. Gone, completely. The other two had genuine VHS effects in some parts (they used VHS camcorders for the wrap-arounds and transferred digital video to VHS and to digital again on other parts) and didn't use the fake post-production effects so much.

Plus, I haven't seen Gorgeous Vortex yet, so I can't really say if I'd tell you that its worth getting for that segment alone.

Having said that, this is really my personal opinion and it doesn't count more or less than any others'. I'd say rent it, or at least wait until the price drops so you can have a chance to see Gorgeous Vortex aswell, since it seems to be the most serious of the shorts.

Let's see what other users have to say about it :)

Everything miguel said is true. It was bad. Some like it but it lacked completely and drifted from the first two completely in style. It was disappointing.

Oh my god, unisex names killed my family.

Agreed! A overall bad film. Very disappointed. The first two films looked and felt real.

I just watched it for the first time tonight and I was completely prepared to hate it, but ended up enjoying it. Yeah, it's not at all like the other two and sure, the gore and insanity level has been turned down a bit...but it has a crazy charm to it IMO.

Bonestorm was so refreshing and original to me. I actually wish it would've been a full length movie.

Bone storm was the skateboarding one right? That's the one I, and many other people, hate the most, because it's so dragged on, and not entertaining at all.

Entertained me. The stupid magician and cape bored me. Go figure.

Not as bad as everyone seems to be making it out to be. Everyone trashed the first two as well now all of a sudden people are saying the first two were somehow these masterpieces (far from it but they were still enjoyable). It's all subjective. If you compare this to the others, yes, it's not as good. But I found it to be entertaining and clever. I didn't like the main theme that much. The ending is disappointing. Also didn't find the magician feature to be all that original but it was well-done but predictable outcome. Parallel Monsters was decent and the best was the skate punks in Mexico. Overall it's more than watchable than a lot of other crap on Netflix.

It wasn't very good at all. I had turned the movie about 30 minutes in because I wasn't impressed. But then I ended up going back and forcing myself to watch the rest of it, being the completist I am. I figured I'd seen the first two so I might as well finish this so I can say I've seen them all. If I hadn't seen the first two I would never have finished this movie.

Well, if you haven't seen the missing segment then you haven't seen them all haha.
